I did it!!

I finally did it, yesterday when i went to football with my dad and brother i finally took my walking stick. In fact a lot of people were polite, letting me on metro before them and giving up seats for me. Very kind.

Except for one women as i was about to get in the lift to leave the football this woman barged past me and took my spot in the lift before i could get in. Plus she was a member of staff at the stadium. Very rude. But a drunk man started ranting and raving about how what she had done to me. But other than that everthing went well.

Dont know why i was so scared

Congrats, Sarah! New behaviors can be hard to start, and I am so glad you did it! I feel so much safer out doors with my crutch, and people are nicer to me when they see it. Good for you!

I think i would prefer it if it was a crutch i was using but so far i am happy

Good for you Sarah.

Well done Sarah, You should be very proud. Generally people are kind and helpful but of course whoever you are and whereever you go there will always be someone who is rude and thoughtless, sadly just a fact of life.

Hope you feel more able to go out more often now with your walking stick.

Linnet xx👍👍👍👍👍

YEAH YOU!! I am so happy to hear you got through this as I recall how anxious this made you feel.  WTG Sarah you should feel very good about yourself and know it will only get easier for you each time. Remember to always keep that head up - you are beautiful and deserving.

Awwww thank you hun

Very happy to hear, Sarah.  You'll find most people are kind, and will sometimes go out of their way to help you as you're out and about.

You'll run into the random rude/staring person, but that goes right along with anything when it comes to people.

I think the funnest moment for me after I started using my cane out and about was listening to a mother try to find a polite and simple way to explain to her daughter when she asked why I was carrying a stick when I wasn't old like grandpa.

Here's to being more comfortable when out and about =)

Awww i think i would have just told the child to save the mother the embarrassment haha.

But yes it seemed people were a lot more kind as it indicates theres something wrong with me

I MUCH prefer my crutch for using outside to a cane or trekking pole. I do not rest my underarm on the crutch and support my body that way, but use my left hand that holds the crutch as the support. The crutch does stay under my arm, but not for bodily support. I am right-handed, so using a cane or pole in my left hand feels wobbly and unsafe. But the left hand with the crutch is more than fine.

You might seriously consider using a crutch instead.

well done xx

Well done Sarah!

Yeah. My only problem with using my stick in right hand is that it puts pressure on my shoulder which i think needs operating on to 😂

Sarah, that is a big problem. If I were you, and I had a problem shoulder - the one you have to use because it is opposite your sick leg - then I would use two crutches (or two sticks - whichever works best for you. I can't use sticks, as they are too unstable for me). Using two means less pressure on the hurt shoulder, and you are less apt to hurt it even more.

Yeah except were would i get crutches? Last time i saw my doc he said it was gonna be last shoulder appointment but he said it isnt healed and wants to operate. Im just waiting for next appoitment with him to see whats going to happen. This may be a long year for me

Sarah, if you google or go on Amazon UK, you can get them very cheap. Or there should be a pharmacy or store not too far from where you live where they are sold. In my suburb here in the US, there is a pharmacy 5 blocks from my home that sells medical devices. It shouldn't be hard to get a pair of crutches.

Ill look into it. Thank you so much

Good on you Sarah. Smart move to go with your dad and brother. Now you need to do it again so you really get used to it and you're not stuck at home.

And I'm sorry about your shoulder. I didn't know that was bad too. I think it would be good to get crutches for lots of reasons. People respect crutchesore than sticks, they look temporary like When I'm off these crutches. . ., they're better for your shoulder, and you're much more stable on them. Because lots of people use them you can get them easily. Like at a chemist, and they're not even very expensive.

I think you've been so courageous!!! Good on you!

Yeah iv managed to go out today and yesterday on my own with it which really helped because its been snowing.

And to be honest iv never seen a shop that sells walking sticks or crutches

Sarah, there are a number of ways to find crutches.

-You can use your local telephone book to search for Home Medical Equipment, if phone books still exist where you live.

-You can ask someone at your pharmacy where you can buy crutches.

-You can ask your doctor's office or the NHS office where to get them.

-You can purchase them on Amazon UK, or any other online site that sells them.

-You can google 'Home Medical Equipment" or "Crutches" for sale in your local area, and the names of all the places that sell them will show up.

Your parents should also be able to help you obtain them. It is a basic need for so many people, and if you need and want then, you should have them! You may need them after your hip replacement anyway.
