A month back I came back from a trip and was getting severe head pain nausea and abdominal pain so I assumed I had caught a virus and waited for it to pass through. During the first five days I couldn't keep any food down but my stool was fine and I was just getting chills and feeling sick overall. Another week passed and I thought it was enough so I went to the doctor and they said that it was acid and gave me omeprozale. I started taking it and it made me even more sick to the point of not being able to get out of bed so I went to an a and e where they took blood tests and said I had viral gastroenteritis which made more sense and said it was taking a while to go. I'm on the 4th week now and although my stomach is gradually getting better I still have abdominal pain and really loose stools. But my headache has developed and it's becoming increasingly painful and I have a sore throat and ear pain on top of that. I've been to the doctor again and my stool is supposedly fine and so are my blood tests and they said he didn't think it was viral after all. I have no idea what the problem is and im getting nowhere atm. i feel helpless because I have no idea what's going on and I could do with some suggestions as to what to do now
Could be a parasite too. Viral infection usually shows up in bloodwork as increased lymphocytes. Bacterial is easy to spot. Parasitic, sometimes not even in stool samples. Have you been someplace exotic? Alternatively, your acid blocker may have reduced your immunity further on top of the initial viral infection and you may have caught something on top.
If your stools are very loose or watery you could have a mineral imbalance. Try eating bland foods for a few days, along with small doses of electrolytes and see if any improvements. Have you lost weight?
Thank you for the response and yes I have lost 4 pounds since the start
Where had you been Bob?
I went to Alton towers as part of an end of year college trip. Makes sense to have caught a parasite because it's a big tourist attraction
Could it possibly be what you ate/drank? Not necessarily at Alton Towers. Were you in a group and did any of them become ill? You could have picked up something before you went to AT
I bought a coffee from their and after a couple of hours I started feeling sick, at that point I assumed that was the problem. None of the guys in the group got ill afterwards either, it was just me which was what got me worried. im not exactly strong in the medical sense but wouldn't it have passed by now if it were a virus?
Hi Bob,
Sounds like you're having an unpleasant time of things right now. Persevere with the trips to the gp. Have you explained that the headaches are a symptom too? Keep up your fluids and hopefully, things will settle down more over the coming couple of weeks. As you've been vomiting and don't feel your stools are how they should be, you could be dehydrated on top of the other issues which can cause headaches. If your symptoms persist and your gp is still saying things are ok, ask to see someone else at the group practice. You need reassurance here. Sometimes, unfortunately illness takes time to shake but, still worth checking every avenue.
Best wishes
Beverley
I will and hopefully things turn out well.
Thank you
Could this possibly have something to do with an extreme ride[s] at Alton Towers? Sometimes these rides can cause problems in the inner ear and that in turn can cause severe sickness. might be worth mentioning it to your GP.
Yes thank you I will
