I don't want to reduce my dose

I've been on citalopram for about a year, after I became really depressed and had major anxiety. I was put on fluoxetine but was taken off it when I was admitted to auicidal tendencies.

I'm a teenager and my parents have been pushing for me to be taken off my medication/ it being reduced. I really don't want to reduce it. Are there any long term effects for taking citalopram? I'm on 40mg a day an it's been working really well I've been clean from self harming for about 5 months. Is there any problems with staying on the meds

but I think readying the dose must come of u

not ur parent

and this thing need to discuse it with ur Dr

umm Minot sure but I think there is no secnfiecnt think in long trems

Thank you

Hi em63850,

All meds have long term effects on your body. From my understanding, your body tries to remove any drug you take via the kidneys/ liver and this puts a strain on these organs. I noticed with the citalopram I used to sweat excessively (body trying to secrete the citalopram) for a few months until I got used to it. To be honest though, when you need to take an antidrpessant these problems are of little concern because your needs outweigh the risks. The only thing I would say is that when you are on citalopram, although they do make you feel so much better once they are in your system, you will be unaware that you lose your sprite, your essence, your spark. It's very subtle, but when you start to withdraw you will understand what I mean becasue you feel like your good self again. b.t.w if you are going to withdraw, I'm using the citalopram drops over a year to withdraw very gradually, the usual method of alternating the tablet doses each day just didn't work, too severe and too quick.

Best wishes.
