It's because of the way it's portrayed in the media. I am an author and I have many self published books and they are all sad and melancholic. I have love poems and nature poems. Also poems in cards. I've been in several lots of supported housing and suffered anxiety and depression but I make it part of my work.
Hey Rachel, I emphasise with you as I am the same age. What portrayal In the media is it that bothers you? I must be missing something. Please enlighten me? You mention you have written books. What a fantastic achievement. I really do hope you give yourself the credit you deserve. How wonderful! However anxiety and depression as I'm sure you are aware, does not discriminate. It can affect anyone no matter who or what they are. You say you suffer with anxiety and depression. I know only too well how difficult that is to live with so I really do understand. I would rather not have this condition and be poor rather than rich and depressed. Well as least you channel your depression into something productive and therefore positive. That's a good way of dealing with it. But unfortunately it doesn't take away how you feel. If only it would make it disappear, we wish!.. Keep doing the things you love. Keep reading poetry. As for the poems you write being "melancholy" you could also interpret them as being, deep, meaningful and dreamy. I'm here if you need to message me anytime, Donna xxx
I think a times are changing. A new 50 is here. People are more fit and knowledgeable now. The old grannies and old geezer image is gone. Movies are coming out with older actors having the time of their lives. Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Holly Hunter, Nicole kidman, Julia Roberts, and on and on. We will get old but people will get old with us. We won't get old alone. It is what you make of it. Don't think of age. No one said you have to. You will start seeing young people for who they are--not as mature/immature, broke, thinks a pimple is the end of the world. As they say you are turning into a fine wine.
