I had Complete hip replacement 8 weeks ago

I still can not reach my right foot to put my sock on any suggestions ? Im riding a stationary bike for exersize

Slow down!! Far too early to expect to put your socks on! I think it was about 5/6  months before I could....a bit of a struggle even now at 8 months....be careful and take your time!

Don't worry about it..

It was 16wks before I could do it,and as Crissy I still struggle some days 9mnths on.

I would be careful using the bike so soon as well, stick to easy easy spinning for 5-15 mins max..the muscles Havnt had time to heal properly yet.

It was 6months before I could ride the exercise bike.

OK. Get yourself one of these devices that aids you putting socks on. I had one of these and it was invaluable. Take it easy on the exercise so well. Walking is good. You can take it steady and increase your distance gradually without extra stress on those healing muscles and things. You have had major surgery, don't knock yourself out .

One of the restrictions with Posterior, my friend is over 4 yrs and still has difficulty with socks and shoes and she had posterior.....I had anterior and do not have these issues....but ended up with narley nerve damage and IT band damage.....I was one of the unlucky ones that ended up with this  cwap ...

Yes slow down you might do yourself harm, I have what they call a sock aid and it is great you don't have to bend down, you take care

My friend gave me her husband's grip thing for socks, etc. and I never needed it.....he had posterior many years ago and hikes all over the world......

So the difference in the 2 approaches in my mind is questionable....but we do what we do.

Still a struggle for me after 15 months

4 yrs post op with anterior and my life has changed in ways I did NOT expect......but no groin pain...

Surgeries are gambles....

I'm 18 months post op and I can't reach either of my feet to put on socks but I've got an invaluable tool - he's called a husband!

Don't overdo the exercise - I went swimming after 3 months hoping to improve my situation and now the pain has become much worse than I have ever had prior to the op. I'm waiting for the result of an MRI to see if I have nerve damage.

Pat what approach of THR did u have?

That's very important to know. then a person can suggest how to get those Darn socks on.

Since four months I could lift the leg and sit on the other one.still it's a reach to get there

I have used reachers to get started with. There are also a thing that you fold over put ur sock on it then there are a couple off rope on other side to slide ur foot into and pull up the sock.it was a wonderful thing to use.

Hello Pat,

When I had my first THR at the VA hospital. The rehab department, send me home with a 'Sock Jack'. It's a simply designed apparatus. Which allows you to place your sock on the sock jack. Then place your foot inside , and gently pull the jack over your heel and up. It's a pretty cool idea.

I still use it every day myself. Otherwise I would have difficulty putting my socks on. I'm 19 months post op. And I'm having the second THR done this Thursday morning.

So ask your physical therapist about this. Good luck.

I hope everything goes well for you on Thursday and look forward to hearing how you are afterwards.

Hi Pat,  It is definitely too early to even think about getting your sock on yet.  I got a sock aid which is like a three-pronged baseball mitt with long tapes.  You squash the prongs together and put your sock or stocking over the end, throw it onto the floor, keeping hold of the tapes, put your foot into it and pull up - magic!  I only got mine a couple of weeks ago (7 weeks post op) before then my husband was having to help me - now I am independent!!!  Little things like this make all the difference.  You can also get 'knicker sticks' which help you get your knicks on too - look on Amazon 'disability aids' - not expensive.  Riding a stationary bike is also a bit iffy at this stage too.  I just started very gentle swimming a couple of weeks ago - mainly just walking up and down the pool and doing my physio exercises.  Not even contemplating cycling until I've seen the consultant next month (12 weeks post op).

Take things slowly - don't try to run before you can walk and listen to your body.  We're all impatient to do more than we should but it's not a good idea in the long run.

Hope all goes well - keep us posted.

Hi Stella thank you so much for your reply My dr said I did so well that I could ride a stationary bike at 8 weeks  and walk thats about it for now

Thank you for the reply Sue Im trying but antsy I guess have to slow down a little

THanks Glenda I got the sock

I'd be very careful using a bike so soon after THR..

I tried it and 9wks post op which ended up setting my recovery back a few weeks.

Just make sure you take it very slowly at first with easy spinning for no more than 5mins to start, extending the time very slowly..Don't be tempted to ride every day either, keep to 3times a week.

If you get pain afterwards then I'd leave it for a few more weeks.

Only my opinion of course, each to their own.

Daily walks using 2sticks for the 1st six weeks, then going down to 1stick,gradually increasing the distance did was the best form of rehab for me.

Thanks Paulus Im taking it real slow good luck to you keep in touch

Don't worry that is completely normal. You probably reach down and get a tight feeling in your hip, don't push it. That feeling is good, that means that your doctor put the hip in tightly, and it will be a less risk of popping out. Your muscles around it just need to build up and over time it will loosen...in a good way.
