I hate the ankle swelling and it hurts on the shin as well

I had my hip replacement on 10/18 and I am still having swelling.  I went to see the surgeon and he didn't seem too concerned.  I had an ultrasound and it was OK. (no DVT).  It is difficult to keep the leg elevated so many times a day and I am so frustrated.  Is this normal?

My surgery was four years ago with an awful outcome of drop foot.  Have no idea if that played into my swelling problem, but I wore compressions stockings for weeks and weeks.  Honestly think they caused more harm than good.  Eventualy.....eventualy the swelling goes down.  Here's what tears me up.  I have a friend aged 64 and obese.  She had THR 1.5 weeks ago and has nearly no swelling.  How can that be?  She's very inactive whereas I went back to a desk job fairly fast, little over a month.  Maybe being too active keeps the swelling up?

I agree with you.  I, too, have always been very active, swimminbg, excercising, etc and never sitting down too long.  I only weigh 108 lbs. after surgery and hate the swelling."  I fell while doing a "crazy dance move"  (stupid me).  I never had any health issuew and I am 83 years young..Please let me know how others are coping and if it will get better.  I have pain killers and wonder if tht could cause the swelling?  Thanks so much.

I still have a lot of swelling too and I'm at 11 weeks... It gets better with activity.. I think it's just a long process for some people..

Hi gloria,

So sorry to hear this ... Good thing that it was checked -

Can you stand on that foot?  does it hurt or is it just swollen - do you have a fever?

has it gone down a little compared to right after surgery? My leg was swollen right after surgery - started at the top, going down and stayed swollen around my ankle for weeks - skin was tight and reddish ...

be well and take care

big warm hug
