I went to my pre op apointment and the doctor told me " there is really no pain" I want to know what others think of this comment. Everything that I have read and watched paints a completey diferant story. Being positive is one this, but I feel she should have told me the whole truth. I'm scared to death. Advise????
Totally untrue! Read all the previous posts and you'll see that just is not the case
I cannot believe any specialist or consultant would state that this surgery is not associated with pain or discomfort as this is simply not true.
some women do tend to sail through with minimal problems but others like myself sadly don't.
I have been unlucky in encountering problems with my bladder not working since my surgery 4.5 weeks ago thus still have a catheter but recognise from speaking to many that thus only happens to a small percentage of women in the scheme of things.
the main thing I can share is that for 48 hours after surgery is uncomfortable. you should definitely opt to take pain medication during that period as i found it very difficult to get to sleep in any one position without pain unless I took the pain med which included morphine only the day after surgery. the vaginal pack removal was slightly uncomfortable bug no huge pain for me as was the catheter removal but the catheter had to go back almost immediately as bladder was not working
re bowel movement I would also try if possible to open bowels prior to surgery and also take movicol after surgery as it will really help you to have a bowel movement.
it is uncomfortable bit the pain is manageable and will ease off after first few days and also after first bowel movement post surgery.
hope that goes done way to help. you will be fine. thinking of you and hope all goes well.

Hi Andrea I had a lot of pain first few days , first night very bad no sleep what so ever, but wen u think what has been done u r bound to get pain, I had both a@p repair , but after few days it's gets much better then just discomfort I have no regrets the results have been anazing
I think that any surgery involves some pain. The unknown is scary and stress/anxiety does increase pain and make it less tolerable. Could you contact your physician and ask to discuss pain management strategies so that you enter this less fearful? Have you had a surgery before, if so what wotked for you then?
Pain is inevitable following most surgery and especially pelvic floor surgery. Your bowel and bladder are handled and there's obviously sutures in place. Pelvic floor pain is slightly different to a hysterectomy for instance in that the pain can sometimes get worse at around 3-6 weeks when the sutures start to pull before they eventually dissolve. Sutures dissolve anything from 4-12 weeks so you have to be prepared for the discomfort to continue for some time. Women have a lot of nerves and ligaments in the pelvic area so you are always going to have some pain. The reason why a lot of women don't feel a lot of pain when they wake up from surgery and for a day or so afterwards is because of the analgesia given in theatre which is given intravenously. Make sure you're discharged with plenty of pain relief and stool softener..........you'll need it.
Thank you..
Thank you so much...
I'm feeling a little calmer
I did try to talk to the doctor yesterday and she said there really isn't any nerves down there and not to worry about pain meds because I won't be in that much pain...
There are quite a few of us that can advise you I would like to set your mind at ease. I felt a lot of discomfort but the pain pills worked very well. I would stay ahead of the pain.
My biggest suggestion for you is to eat light the days before surgery. This will make it much easier to have a BM after surgery. Drink a lot of water.
Ask for a pill before they pulled out the packing. It only last a few seconds but it would be nice to take the edge off.
I would suggest a pillow under your bun when you head home.
Oh and yes I have had allot of surgerys in the past..
The doctor told me there are no nerves down there and not to worry about pain meds because it really doesn't hurt...
Thank you for that, I'm going to start a light diet.
I had the bladder prolapse (into the vagina) repaired at the same time as the hysterectomy. I had no pain at all. None at any point. No bladder problems, nothing. I can still remember my first walk to the loo from the bed and suddenly that prolapse wasn't there! I could have danced:-)))) It was brilliant! My repair did fail though but that was most likely because I have a connective tissue disorder, but most people find theirs are fine:-))))
Matron's answer was right on target!!
We have nerves in every part of the body. Is your consultant a Urogynaecologist or a Gynaecologist, there is a very big difference?
Thank you sherrie x
I should have added, I did take Ibuprofen as instructed because they told me even if I didn't need it for the pain it helps with inflammation.
