i have a weird sensation in my throat

Hi there im 20 years old and for as long as i can remember ive suffered from health anxiety, for the past few weeks my anxuety has been really high from various things and ive been noticing that i have a sensation of somthing being in my throat/ back of my tongue, my throat also feels abit tight but i can swollow fine and eat and drink fine, i can breathe fine too is this just anxiety nd should i be concerned?

Hi Maisie

I honestly think it is anxiety. These kind of sensations are common. In the past I have had "lumps" in my throat, constriction in my throat, pulsating on my tongue and throat etc. I dont under estimate the fear it causes. The first time I felt a lump when I swallowed it lasted for days and I was petrified.

Just keep reminding yourself its anxiety and try your best to relax. When we are anxious we tense up and our muscles inside and out contract inside and out.

Hugs xx

Thanks so much louise for your reply iam also 27 weeks pregnant and suffer with alot of heart burn and reflux i somtimes think this causes the symptoms but my anxiety is certaintly not helping, it seems like everyday iam worried and feel so tired when i get like this oh and stressy and really short tempered, il be pleased when my good days come around and i feel some normality, but thanks again x

Your pregnancy hormones probably arent helping the situation.

I absolutlt agree with u there, since becoming pregnant again my anxiety has returned, i really thought i beat it as i felt normal. About 3 years ago i kept getting headaches and was so sure it was a brain tumor but obviouslt it wasnt... just anxiety, i some how got over it and felt worry free right up until now and my fears of being ill all the time are back. X

You will get over it again. I started with anxiety at 17 and during my first pregnancy at age 19 I was a bit of a mess. Once my daughter was born that kind of took it away for years. I think some of us by nature or genes are naturally predisposed to these kind of issues. Ive accepted its an ongoing issue with me. Im 40 now and its up and down and mostly controlled with Citalopram. Ive had some horrendous times but have a happy, very independent 20 year old who loves life and a quirky, strong minded 12 year old. Both girls. I must have done something right! In fact I honestly think my issues have made me a better mum. Im very sensitive to their feelings and will listen and talk to them about anything.

sound like a globas sensation which is the term which reffers to a feeling of something in the throat and i suffered this really bad when my anxiety is high and it is just down to your anxiety especially if you can swallow and eat fine smile i was put on meds for anxiety 5 weeks ago and my lump feeling in my throat has gone you shouldnt be concerned about this at allsmile

ive just read that you suffer from alot of acid reflux this can also cause a lump sensation in your throat because when you have acid reflux the acid comes up from you stomach and into your esophgus probably not spelt that right but when that happens your muscles in your throat contract to stop the acid coming up into your mouth so this may be your problem try goin to your local pharmacy and gettin some over the counter meds just ask them if its ok to take while your pregnant

Thanks shelby ive also read that reflux causes the sensatuon of there being somthing in the throat, but with me being so anxious all the time i over think it and think its somthing much worse, when im busy doing somthing i forgt all about the sensation but as soon as i think about it again its back :-( hopefully itl go when my anxiety calms down, thanks anyway x

ok i hope you get better soon and also if your anxiety is a big problem for you and it doesnt shift go to your docotors they can give you medication ot therapy that can help yousmile

Very common, I've suffered with the lump in the throat for a long time, I know its anxiety as I've had a camera down to check and everything is fine, but it's an awful feeling

Thaanks for your advice i akso am pregnant and suffere quite alot with acid reflux/ heartburn indigestion which i no can cause the feeling, i feel like i constantly have a ball of phlegm down my throat and cant swollow it away, was that a similar sensation for you?

Thankyou again i hope so too, it feels like i constantly have a ball of phlegm in my throat that i cant swallow away is that similar to what you have experienced? It tends to feel better when im eating and drinking. Xx

Your very welcome Yeah mine was exactly the same got better with eating and drinking and beutter when laying down also prob cause I was more relaxed and I kept constantly coughing trying to get it up but nothing just a dry cough but now it's gone since been on meds

Its quite frustrating always feeling somthing in there hopefully it will subside when my anxiety calms down, how long have you suffered from health anxiety? And what other worrying symptoms have tou had that turned out to be nothing? Xx

Suffered with it all my life started off as not being able to walk down the road on my own then I started getting panic attacks the last year or so I worried that I had something wrong with my heart had ecg what came back normal then I worried I had leukemia cause had a swollen gland in my neck and worried about having a brain tumor cause had headaches starting to get better now thoughsmile always thought the worst case scenario all the time lol x

Yeh same ive worried my self silly about having all these horrible illnesses and turned out to be just anxiety i hope one day il feel some what normal, i too have had health anxiwty ever since i was a child, feeling worried all day everyday is normal to me now ive learned to cope with it the best way i can xx

yes thats exactly how it is, it genuinely feels like phlegm that just wont pass - its maddening.  I think in essence when your throat tightens - which it does with anxiety we are feeling the normal flow of phlegm which everyone has.  We start to worry because it feels like its a problem, when in fact its normal and normally we dont feel it. We then become focused on it - and it goes round in circles. Reflux can yeah, they thought it might be the case with me, so they gave omeprazole - which didnt help at all. so just plain old anxiety - but its terrible to the extreme

when you say you hope you feel normal do you just not feel right thats what i feel like i feel really detached still its really annoying just feel like im in a dream all the time and my head feel really foggy sort of thing it is hard to explain lol glad my panic attacks have gone but just wish i felt normal again

Sounds like depersonalisation, very common with anxiety but very distressing also. It has bothered me a lot to very the years,it does feel very overpowering I know
