I have been prescribed to take 1,000mg of iron per day. No doctor has been able to explain to me why

Hi Clifton, I'm sure your doctor will tell you why. You are obviously anaemic. Have you had blood tests done?

Have you been reffered on to another type of dr?

This seems very odd. In general doctors do nto prescribe medicines without telling you why, and if they do not you should ask.  Usually iron tablets are prescribed for iron deficiency anaemia. What kind of iron tablets are you taking and does it say on the patient information leaflet howmuch you should be taking? You definitely need to talk to your doctor.

Your hemoglobin and or ferritin counts are likely low enough that you require supplementation. Although he/she has prescribed the supplement it is important to determine why your count is low. It is never good practice to just treat the symptoms and not find the root of the problem. 

You need to ask your Dr. directly what the underlying issue is and insist on further investigation. There is always a reason why levels/counts are not acceptable.

Although it is true that there is always a reason why iron levels are low it is not always found. My brother in law has had iron deficiency anaemia for 4-5 years and many tests later doctors have still not discovered the cause. My bil has now decided he does not want any more tests but will continue to take the iron tablets to keep the ferritin levels stable.

my iron levels were low for 4 months, and if they go low again I will not have any more tests. I ended up on a high dependency ward with the last one I had. I think I would rather just put up with the anaemia

Mine was very low, felt awful, and was found to have four gastric ulcers with no symptoms. So tests are needed.

The anti inflams I was taking were also disguising any pain I would have had, and we're slowly eroding my stomach and duodenum wall. It's not normal for a man to be so anaemic that such a high dose is needed.

The op hasn't come back so we may never know.
