I have had heavy periods for as long as I can remember, having a smear my doctor found a fibroid, touched it and it bled.Ive had terrible backache, dull ache in my stomach, and very painful periods, but more a problem than anything a huge bleed after sex, to be told it will happen until the fibroid has shrunk.I had a D and C , Hysteroscopy and Mirena coil fitted on Friday.
Would love to hear of success stories of the Mirena coil and fibroids, and how quick it all takes to work and how it works.I have had lots of different comments from doctors, but not that posative on big fibriods.Mine is 10cmx9cm.A beast I could do without.

I had one large fibriod - about the same size as yours. I had it removed almost 7 months ago by laparascopic myomectomy and had the mirena coil fitted whilst I was "under".
I have waited all this time to see an improvement in my bleeding/discomfort pattern, but the only changes so far are that I am bleeding more often (most of the month now, albeit lighter), I have gained about 1 stone in weight (despite upping the exercise regime) and now have teenage spots! I still suffer common discomfort and sometimes even acute pain.
I am going back to the doctors at the end of the week to see if my "beast" has returned, or if there are other problems with the coil.
I would be very interested to know how you are now getting on?

I had a hysteroscopy and Mirena fitted in Nov 06, to try and shrink the large (9.5cm) and smaller (4cm) fibroids that were 'degenerating'. No such luck! I was in constant pain with the Mirena, but my consultant encouraged me to give it a chance to work-6 weeks later my GP removed it. I have since been told the Mirena should not be used when large fibroids are present?!Am still in a lot of pain with the fibroids and cant leave the house for the first 4 days of my period. But, am having a hysterectomy in 6 weeks time as there appears to be no other option that they havent tried. I cant wait to get my life back, Im only 39 but feel twice my age!

I have a fibroid in my womb and went to see an endocriniologist abroad as the one here didn't listen to what i was saying. The fibroid can be caused by excess eostrogen so if you can get to cause of the hormone imblance the fibroid may shrink. The guy i saw suggested that i may have insulin resistance (i am overweight with a lot of weight on my tummy) and had a hormone imbalance years ago. It maybe through diet and vitamin supplements that you can get to the root of the problem and balance your sugar and hormone levels because having the fibroid removed doesn't mean it wont grow back. There's loads of info and books available online. Don't know if this will help or the insulin thing will apply to you but if you read some info on it you may find other symptoms and can approach it in a different way. Metformin is the drug to balance the insulin but they may not giveit to you. Good luck! Daisy
