I have just been diagnosed with Overactive thyroid

I have just this week been diagnosed and have been put on Carbimazole 20mg. I have noticed on here that people are on a much higher dose than me? Why would this be? Also blood tests shows there is abnormalities in my Liver and Kidneys is this been caused by the thyroid?

Hi Suzy,

the dose of carbimazole depends partly on the severity of your symptoms I think. My levels were not as high as some people on here, but because I was so ill I started at 40 mg. There is no exact science as to what is the right dose for everyone, as people respond differently to it. Just have regular blood tests to make sure your thyroid function stays within normal range.

Not sure whether abnormal liver and kidney function are related, but once your thyroid levels are normal have it checked again.

It usually takes a while for things to level out. Bear with it, it will be fine!

i'm 18 and i've had graves for the past year as far as i know some people take less carbimazole because they only take enough carbimazole to lower thyroid function to normal or others use carbimazole for a block and replace method where you stop your thyroid working completely then take the require amount of levothyroxine. i know everytime i have thyroid function tests they always test liver and renal function but i don't know the link. Get yourself referred to an endocrinologist rather than just seeing a GP!

I am on Carbimazole 30mg, been taking it for a month now. My heartbeat seem to have slow down alot and i don't feel so tired so much. I do get really itchy here and there. I have to get another blood test next month and i hate it. I have been told that i need to take carbimazole for a year so i'm hoping i don't get any bad liver failure or such.
