I live in the North East (Newcastle) and wondered if anyone has an inkling about how long I may have to wait. Didn't get answer from consultant.
Am hobbling everywhere and is difficult to do 'normal' stuff so am hoping op will mean I can get my life back.
If you have seen your consultant, my experience from then on seems to be how fit and healthy you are, as to how quickly your date for the op arrives. They want to operate on the fittest people as it cuts down on any problems post op. Ring his secretary and ask her, she will have the information.
Yep as said 👍 I agree it depends on your health, I saw my consultant back in May, I'm carrying a little extra timber and was left in list till today, I've had my THR this afternoon, as said contact the office of the consultant and ask for an approx time.
Stay Safe & Stay Happy 😊

Thanks that makes sense will sort it I'm sure.
Thanks! Hope your recovery goes well
Hi i live near Middlesbrough and at my consultants appointment he told me the end of summer. His secretary told me next year but i had my preop august and got a letter to go on the 22nd September to see another consultant and he gave me the 4th Oct so had mine thursday😀
I am 9 weeks post op tomorrow and I would like to start by saying it's the best thing since sliced bread! All the pain has gone and I can now do most everyday things I need to do. I hope you have the same recovery. It really couldn't be better. As for time. When I had my initial consultation with my surgeon he told me that everyone has the right to get their op within 18 weeks. Mine was 16. I would 'phone after about 12 weeks if you haven't heard anything. All the very best of luck.
Hi Hobbling,
I first saw consultant in August 2017, he told me I needed hip replacement but the CCG where I live (York) said that patients with a BMI over 30 were no longer acceptable for this surgery. I was sent away to lose weight and offered appointment 6 months later which was February this year. I lost weight and was put on the list at that appointment, I had my op in a July this year. It's been wonderful since I have to say, and I've got my life back. Sleeping better, walking better and no longer taking prescription painkillers. So very glad I've had it done.
I'm now on waiting list for other hip to be replaced, weight stayed off so no restrictions this time. Hopefully be done this year.
Best wishes
My consultant in the south east would not operate on people who smoked or had a BMI over 39, so a bit better than 30. It does seem smoking and being overweight can cause problems with the operation. I think the NHS are getting fussier about hip and knee ops.
The relief from pain is wonderful after the operation. There IS pain, but it's operation pain and is managable with morphine etc, and soon goes away altogether.
Best wishes
Graham
I think it depends where you live, I met a woman on holiday, who was way heavier than me, about to get new knees, with no weight restrictions imposed, she lived in Loughborough. York CCG were way stricter.
Hi
I'm in County Durham and am under North Tees/Hartlepool hospital. Surgeon told me in August 2017 that it would be done within 3 months. Operation actually took place in April this year, so nine months. it has been so worth it though, I was in absolute agony with OA - yes its been a long road to recovery, but wonderful to wake up now without that awful pain. Good luck with your operation.
I am surprised no weight restrictions were imposed at all, but I have heard people of twenty stone having hip ops and eighteen stone knee ops. I am not sure how heavy you think this lady was. They are a bit more careful of heavier people and ops though.
Hi Hobbling
I'm in Northumberland. I first met my consultant in Aug. He fast tracked me and was to have my pre op assessment on Sept 21st but that got moved to Oct 12th. In the meantime, I rang his secretary as I was no longer able to work, and she rang back several days later offering me November 6th as my op date. Good luck to you!
