Hi I have been having kidney infections for two years and I went to see a older woman GP who told me about hiprex.Since being on Hiprex I have had a lot less infections

When other anti-bacterials didn't work, my urine was lab tested and I was prescribed Nitrourantoin. It worked, but the infection returned. I'm now taking Nitrofurantoin one a day as a prophylactic (preventive). I haven't had any more infections since.

I’m curious about Hiprex. What dose do you take? Any side effects with taking Hiprex longterm?

Hi Connie

I have no side effects from Hiprex.its a very bitter tablet to take but I find if I take it fast it's not a issues.the one thing I find that's hard is when my GP tests my urine I get a bit embarrassed but if it stops infections it's a small price to play.I have had a urostomy since 2002 and for the last ten years one infection after another which has got my GP a bit worried about antibiotic resistance but the Hiprex really do keep the infections away. I have more questions just ask and I hope Hiprex will help you.

The dose is 1g twice a dsy

I have a history of bladder infections but they were always treated with antibiotics one round up until three years ago.  That’s when they didn’t respond or did and came back quickly. Finally a urologist put me on the hipprex 2x a day.  It definitely helped but then the price went up to $150 and I stopped.  The bladder problems started immediately and last year was on antibiotics right out of twelve months!

Now I’m on hipprex since January with new insurance only $10 a month.  I have had two times a feeling that an infection was stirring up, but test was negative.

I have no idea but honestly think I’m doomed to stay on these hipprex indefinitely?!

I'm also on a long-term prophylactic low dose antibiotic (Nitrorurantoin) due to recurrent UTIs caused by urine retention. They work as long as I keep taking them. Luckily the UK NHS provides them free of chanrge for my age group (I'm nearly 68).

Any side effects from Hiprex that you’re experiencing? And tell me more about where I get same insurance that covers Hiprex?!  I get recurrent UTIs but now am not racing in for antibiotics but instead, just taking D Mannose every 3 hours for 3 days or so. My UTIs are almost always from E. coli so maybe I’ll be ok with this D Mannose. But if not, I might try Hiprex. Is Hiprex lower dose of an antibiotic than taking Nitroruruantoin?

Micronidazole is prescribed in the UK for yeast infections even C Diff.  You should have a good urologist who will confirm what E coli infection you have and therefore prescribe the correct antibiotic as well as consider the length of time for the antibiotic to kill off all the bacteria infecting you.

It is often seen that antibiotics are given for too short a duration therefore any surviving bugs can become

resistant to the antibiotics fed to them...... It seems that those doctors who prescribe a too short a course of antibiotics are none other than careless. This practice seems very widespread......  Ask any patient if they were tested to see if all the bacteria they were infected with were killed off. I would wager all never get a test.  In any case there can be a small colony that may well be undetectable by usual means that are still harbored by a living organism so it really is a hit and miss game.......  Even after many many months there are some bacterias that are living within the body that are so small a colony that they do not cause bad symptoms but if they do cause symptoms they need killing/eradicating.

I am your age.  The Urologist said post menopause causes chronic uti

I also use estrace hormone cream small amount 2x week
