Hiya . i just got my dates for pre op 18th Dec and op 5th Jan for my second hip replacement (this time right) . the left was done Jan this year . at least i know what to expect this time :blush:

i have 2nd on 22nd january but am in agony with my back as well at the moment .
i feel very low and consultant cannot say if my back will improve after hip op so i am very worried as in excruciating pain .
i too am not so worried a out hip op as had rthr 3 years ago very successfully but did not have back probs then !
good luck and not much longer to wait

I had my preassement 3weeks ago still no date for joint clinic or op getting really depressed as I don’t sleep and feel I have just been left haning

I had my op nearly 2 years ago, but they did the same to me. i had my pre op assessment very soon after my initial consultation where i agreed to have RTHR. so i assumed that I’d be having the op very soon even though I’d not been given a date. I waited and waited and heard nothing. when i spoke to my GP i was told to contact the admissions secretary and keep pestering them. by this time I’d given up work as i thought i was going to be laid up for a couple of months.
eventually after many phone calls to the secretary i was given a date. i think this was to keep me quiet.
this date was cancelled. i started pestering the secretary again and she was left in no doubt that i was not happy. i was given another date. i asked for assurance that this would not be cancelled. which i was given.
i think what I’m trying to say is be a nuisance and keep reminding them that you exist. eventually it’ll happen and you’ll get your op.

I promised an update and here it is. All went well and things have changed a teeny bit since my last one 2 years ago. last time I was given sedatives pre-operatively but this time no sedatives and I walked to the theatre. I had the epidural and and was so sedated that I did not know anything until I woke up in recovery. Op took quite a long time this time as he had a few problems. Apparently my new hip is 3 sizes larger than the previous replacement- I didn’t even know they sized them. Also had to have the socket packed out with 3 layers of bone graft but was told that my bones are strong and in good shape.
Day 1 I only walked to the door and back as I get quite faint with opiates- also very itchy. I’m allergic to all NSAIDS so pain management could potentially be a challenge but I cope well with normal paracetomol (acetametophen in the USA) and codeine.
Day 2 I walked down the hall and up and down the stairs.
Day 3 I had my xray and was home by 1100
Thank heavens for my husband. He is not a very patient soul but it is very reassuring to just know he is there.
Day 4 he got me up and dressed and got my porridge and left me with a flask of coffee and went to work, I must say I love how each 24 hours brings such a marked improvement.
I’m not pushing it but so far so good.

It’s good to hear you’re doing well. Like you, it’s almost two years since I had my first RTHR. I completed my LTHR yesterday. Luckily, I was in and out the same day. No cane, crutches, or walker. I feel very fortunate. It’s good to know a little of what to expect based on the past experience, but like you said, things have changed - for the good, I think.

thanks for replying I a have been told by my consultant and my gp go to start nagging them I am going to after Christmas as there is no point at the moment it ridculouse how they keep you waiting I have no life and can’t see and relife any time soon so depressed and fed up but cant see the point to haveing my preassement

oh my word!!! ‘in and out same day’ and no walking aids !!
i thought i was doing well walking with one stick by day 8 .
Well im not in a hurry. Doing little hut often seems to work best for me. if i exercise too much or walk to far i hurt, so I’m enjoying some quiet recovery time.
keep up the good work and let me know how you’re progressing
