I'm 11 months in now and it's my second TKR. The first one was flawless so I'm grateful for that. This one, albeit better that the natural one by a long way has given me trouble since it was done. It's not when I'm walking, it's after sitting. The pain, which was on the side has now moved to over the knee and there is some swelling. I'm worried that it's starting to fail. Do you think I'm being a worry head for nothing? Another thing, it feels like it's over extending and sometimes it gives way a bit.
I would suggest a new set of xrays to make sure its still where it should be especially the knee cap. A friend/neighbor of mine had a double tkr a number of years back and both patellers popped off almost simultaneously. In his case, they blamed it on obesity. I was never sure my original was either the proper prosthesis or in correctly as my foot always opened up when I walked. The revision was a different story. Different surgeon, different brand of joint and have always walked straight.
Yes my foot turnes out and my hip is grumbling. It has never felt like it was put together right, know what I mean?
And it gives way sometimes, both ways. It's managagable don't get me wrong but when you had one really successful one, you kind of know when it's not right.
I wound up with some spinal stenosis and from time to time have had to go the steroid injection route for the pain in lower back, hip and the nerve that runs down the outside of the leg to just above the knee then crosses over to the inside down to the foot. I was 65 when this all started and now 12 1/2 years later still doing battle. My condition started with a rare tumor and has pretty much taken over my life, especially the last couple of years.
yes, my foot turns out also, and the hip feels strange. . . loose somehow, as if it might dislocate at any moment . . . Knee pain comes and goes for no reason it seems. . either because i haven't exercised enough or I have exercised too much . . Hope you sort yours out!
My Physical Therapist mentioned that if the knee prosthetics
weren't aligned correctly, hip dislocation was one thing that could occur.
Don't like the sound of that. . please!!! My surgeon is a real expert on knees, so I really hope he hasn't aligned them incorrectly! I don't think so really . . I think perhaps the hip is due to weak muscles..well, almost non existent muscles at the moment although I;m working very hard on them . .they just don't seem to develop much!
I hope that the alignment is the problem. That is where all the measuring and expertise during surgery is focused (from my surgeon who has done over 1000 of these, he enjoys them) I know my hip is weak and sore on that side because it was trying to adapt to a bad knee! On top of that they really, really strain the new knee to make sure everything is secure. I was awake for a lot of my surgery (with a screen so I could not see) and the first thing I saw was the surgeon grab my leg and raise it straight up and move it at odd angles. I did not watch anymore and adjusted the screen. I watched the op on YouTube and the wrenching they do is painful to watch. Maybe you can get exercises aimed specifically at strengthening the hip?
I stayed wide awake during the whole procedure, and it was over two and ahalf hours . . a lot of banging and sawing, and I was freezing cold in spite of there being a sort of blower heater by my neck . . probably shcok to the pool old body being illtreated like that! Yes, like you, I saw him lift the leg right up as he was dousing it with some yellow disinfectant but didn't see much else except the blood continually dripping through the drain . . tried not to look at that, and kep my eyes mostly on the clock, thinking WHEN is he going to finish! I haven't seen it on YouTube yet . . . I will sometime, but not perhaps quite yet . . . .
It is difficult to watch on YouTube... . When you finally get adusted, and they do the 'carpentry', it is pretty fascinating. Mine took nearly 3 and 1/2 hours as the damage was bad and they had to do a little more. Post op recovery after a spinal block was a breeze. I felt great. Drained but great.
