I need a double hip replacement & wonder what is the average time you waited between first & second op
Hi Veronica
I also needed two hip replacements, my surgeon wanted to do them 6 months apart. However, I had a very unpleasant and painful experience with my first op (due to the severity of the arthritis) and felt unable to cope with another op so close to the first one, so I postponed the 2nd op for a further 6 months.
Physically I should have had the 2nd op when my surgeon recommended it but mentally I couldn't have coped with it.
I am pleased to report that my 2nd op went really, really well. I was only in hospital for 2 days, walking well with crutches by day 4, walking with just a stick by day 10 and driving at 3 weeks.
So, the answer is that it really depends on you. Do bear in mind that no 2 operations are the same, even the same type of op on the same person.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Thank you. I was hoping for 6 - 12 months apart
I had my first on September 18, 2017 and my second replacement is scheduled for January 15. Hope this helps.
I ended up getting both hips done at the same time and that was 6 weeks and 1 day ago, both needed done was offered 1 now (end of November) and other in March or both in November, the negative s are obviously you have no good leg and recovery I think anyway has been a bit tougher for myself than someone who has only been 1 hip done, I'm only 49 but was mentally tougher than a thought but now I'm fairly glad I don't have to go back and through all that again,
How you doing getting around I am dreading the op x
Hi I am having both hips replaced my first was planned for 14th Dec but has been postponed to 31st Jan as I had a bad cold I discussed having both at the same time but surgeon was not too keen and prefers to leave 6 weeks between I have heard of people having 2 ops within 1 week a lot depends on your surgeon your general health and age must admit I wouldn't mind getting both done at once now .
All the best.
Hi
I had my first hip replacement 19th October 2017 at my six week check up I was put back on the waiting for my second hip replacement which I am hoping will be march/April
My surgeon said he likes to wait at least 12weeks apart I can't wait to have it done the second hip is quite bad after having to compensate for the operated hip at least I hope to be 100% by summer
Susan
Did you have lateral/posterior THR & can you walk normally now?
Good luck with your op
Will your op be anterior as 6 weeks apart seems very close?
Good luck for your 2nd op
Hi I am having Superpath a sort of minimally invasive posterior with no dislocation hence less soft tissue trauma, if you have never heard of it try googling it there are not many UK surgeons trained in this yet but has been used a lot in US and Australia for 7 or 8 years at least.
I am having lateral THR
Posterior and my right hip feels great. Left is miserable.
