Hi my name is Marisa Midyette I'm 24 years old i have hypothryoidism i found out when i was 13 years old i never started my period never had one either still till this day havent had one i want a baby i get on my thyroid meds and feels it aint helping so i quit taking them feels helpless to take them i need some advice has anyone heard of this?
Hi Marisa, If you have had hypothyroidism for so many years, you are probably vitamin B12 deficient as well. This will stop you becoming pregnant or having your period. You need to make sure that you take you thyroid medications, have sufficient riboflavin (vitamin B2) in your diet, and you will need to have your B12 levels checked and possibly need B12 injections as well. As a question of interest, as we are trying to find out more about what starts hypothyroidism, did you used to have lots of dairy in your deit when you were 13, or would you say you had little to no dairy (milk, cheese or yogurt). Your doctor should be able to monitor how effective your thyroid meds are.
Have you tried dessicated NDT instead of levothyroxine? Some people feel better when on this.
no
Marisa. A 23-year old female in my family has the same problem as you, no periods. Her Prolactin levels are high and the doctor suspects a pituitary gland problem, which is a pea sized gland behind the nose. This gland is the master that controls all the other glands including the Thyroid. Go back to your doctor and persever with the lack of periods issue and ask him if he thinks it might be a pituitary gland issue as it is causing both thyroid malfunction and loss of periods.
