I need to get a surgery for both of my feet at the same time. Is that a good idea.

Hello everyone!!

I am from belgium  and moved to United States 7 years ago.

I want to get my surgery done in belgium since it's scheaper there also to spent time with my family .

i only can be there for 4 weeks after the surgery to recover.

my mom will be taking care of me for those 4 weeks.

will I be able to walk on my own after four weeks to take my flight back to United States ?

I've only had one foot done in the UK on 26th Jan this year, however my discharge notes said i shouldn't fly within 6 weeks of having an anaesthetic. I was also encouraged to walk the same day in a special heel weight bearing shoe. Not sure how this would work with 2 though.

I had both of my feet done at the same time, although didn't take a plane

trip. I was given surgical shoes to wear and crutches to help me get

about. You're supposed to only be on your feet for 15 minutes in every

hour....but with a family to see too that didn't happen.

You should have a check up after 2 weeks and change of dressings so

you will see how recovery is coming along. If you mention to the surgeonwhat you intend to do they will advise, really it's only the flight itself that

is of concern as you could arrange a wheel chair to get you out to the

plane.... have you though about follow up checks and how you would

deal with these?

a lot depends on complexity of your surgery,  method used by the specialist and your age and general health

so my suggestion would be to discuss your plans with your specialist in Belgium well in advance

If your surgery is more complicated as mine was you would not be able to consider travelling for at least 6 weeks.  I am 10 weeks post surgery and still only able to wear a normal shoe for half a day and the rest of the day I am back in surgical shoe (due to pain and swelling),  I am still in quite a bit of pain and would not be able to sit on the plane for hours with my foot down so it would have to be a business class trip.  I am guessing that I am older then you and since I have arthirtis my surgery was more extensive and complcated.

Hi I'm 24 days post op for bi lateral scarf and akins. I really wouldn't want to be traveling to USA in four days time (I'm in the UK). If I had only one foot done it would be easier as you can find it easier to raise one foot better than two. But really it does depend on what you are actually getting done. Also there is an extensive follow up. 6 weeks is usually when you get exrayed and if all ok you get to ditch the heel walking boots. My surgeon said I will recieve some physio and a final check at three months.

Hello, I am also from Belgium. Had my two feet done by a very good surgeon. One in september, one in januari. Normally he does only one foot at a time. Had no pain and not a lot of swelling, could walk from day two with a special shoe, heelwalking. 

After 4 weeks I was good enough to take a plane on my own.

On this forum a lot of people have more problems, so take a good surgeon and the first two weeks it's only resting and elevating your feet. Succes. Chris

I'm going to get a surgery in UZ Gent ,I don't know if you're familiar with the hospital. I'm so nervous sad

I didn't get my ticket yet  because I wasn't sure if 4 weeks stay was enough .

I had my surgery in Antwerp. Age is important, but most important is that you have a foot without artrosis and that the quality of your bones is good.

I am older but my surgeon said swelling was minimal. 

My first surgery (left foot) was mid of september and we went skiing mid of december. No problem with the skiboots and could ski all day.

I think it depends on the kind of bunion surgery they do. Mine was quite extensive--12 days in bandages and a splint, then 4 weeks in a cast, and when the 4 weeks are up I'll have a boot. If you have to have surgery on both feet at once, you will need a wheelchair. I wouldn't advise getting both feet done at once if you can avoid it.
