Hi leah i suffer from health anxiety and generalized anxiety disorder. X
Hi
I suffered badly 9mths ago and now i'm 95% better.
I firstly stopped ALL caffeine (inc fizzy and energy drinks) and alcohol. I replaced these with camomile tea which is brilliant for anxiety it is very calming. I do also drink other fruit teas. I also used lemon balm capsules and still carry Rescue Remedy spray everywhere with me.
Relaxation and breathing helps a huge amount with anxiety and panic.
CBT is very good for breathing and relaxation.
I have used no meds at all and yes it takes longer but well worth the effort.
Hope this helps xx
Hi Lizz997
I am a psychologist and I really enjoy working with my clients who have anxiety and depression, because so often they get better. So yes, in my professional and also personal (I have had my own journey with anxiety) opinion, you can absolutely overcome anxiety and panic attacks. In my experience, it usually takes 10-12 sessions of CBT to treat anxiety and panic, depending on how complex it is. Have you thought about seeing a therapist who uses CBT? Or have you seen one in the past? Happy to pass on some tips for how to find the right psychologist for you.
Yes plz any help would be wonderful. I have been seeing a tharpis for about a year and a half, but I have no insurance so it's through a community health. I go in twice a month but all we do is talk, she has not gave me any copeing skills or anything. Really I feel like it's a waste of my time but I still go hopping there is a method behind this which I have yet to see. We haven't even came up with what has caused my panic nor anxiety or what triggers it. There is a lot of times that I feel hopeless. Any advice would greatly help
Hi Liz, I am sorry to hear therapy hasn’t been helpful so far; that must be so frustrating.
Here are some of my general thoughts on how to find the right therapist. Though of course talk to your GP before making any changes, as they know you and will be able to guide you These are just some general ideas you may want to consider when trying to find the right therapist.
1. The Therapist-Client Connection
Research shows one of the big things that determines how effective treatment is, is the connection between the therapist and client. That is, it’s really important that the client feels comfortable with the therapist and trusts in the method of therapy. Basically, the client needs to feel “yup, my therapist gets me, gets what is maintaining my anxiety and knows what we need to do for me to get better.” Without this, it’s hard to trust the process and stay hopeful that it will work.
2. The Right Method
It’s also really important to find a therapist who uses a method that resonates with you. Some therapies, like CBT take a very goal focussed approach, zeroing in on exactly what is keeping the anxiety going and what needs to be done to reduce it. These therapies focus on giving people the skills and information they need to become their own therapist. Other therapies take a more analytical approach, focussing less on goals and more on self-awareness as a way to create positive change.
It’s totally ok to ask a therapist which method they use. You can also ask their opinion on what they think has caused your anxiety, what’s keeping it going and what needs to be done to address it. It’s also appropriate for clients to talk to their therapist if they start to feel unhopeful about treatment working.
3. It’s Ok to Try a Few Therapists
It can take a few attempts for people to find the right therapist for them. This may involve talking to a GP and getting the names of a few therapists to call. It’s ok to try out a couple of therapists and see which one works for you. If it is through community health, it may be worth asking for a therapist that uses the method you are interested in trying. There is some solid evidence showing CBT to be effective, if you are after a more goal focussed, skills based approach.
I hope that is helpful! And don’t lose hope, it’s possible to get better x
