I'm in my 7th week post op and have been doing fine. Progressing nicely - or so I thought.
While I was in hospital it was discovered that the ibuprofen that iive been taking for years for chronic back pain (with no kidney function tests) was badly affecting my kidneys.
I was referred to our local pain clinic and have been advised to cut down on my tablets. So a week on and I've cut out a couple of tablets a day, and boy do I hurt now.
Now, of course, my hip is so painful and I feel as if I'm back to square one. I realise now that because I didn't feel any pain at first, I probably overdid everything - the walking, exercises etc.
So having been told by the physio that I was doing SO well, I probably wasn't. I'm feeling very down today and I suppose I'll have to begin again and take things more slowly.
I have to see my gp soon to see what new painkillers the pain consultant has suggested, and then maybe I can get back to where I was, but SLOWLY!
It depends how old you are I also have CKD but it is fine for a person of my age....I think that is why we have two Kidneys...they do deterierate after years...But we do have two.... Ian.
I used to take Ibuprofen regularly for my arthritis but I developed a full on allergy to it. I wound up in hospital twice within 2 weeks before we worked out what it was. I thought that it would be the end of me being comfortable. Now, post op I've been very comfortable with one 8mg cocodamol and one Paracetomol 3 times a day and then a 30 mg one at night. I can't take any anti-inflammatory now so use ice post op and cocodamol to stay comfortable. I'm sure you will soon readjust and get back to your place of comfort.
what a dreadful shame. Do you not take co-codamol for the pain?. I take them morning evening and nighttime. I had trouble taking too much ibuprofen, started to play my stomach up. I also have arthritis in my spine, so don't seem to be able to cut pain relief out all together.
I am 2weeks 3days post op and find what you are saying really interesting with regard to Physio. I am progressing quite well, I don't want to overdo it, but again I want to press on as much as I can without causing damage. I am seeing them for the first time tomorrow. The point is Physio told you you were doing well, not overdoing it, so how would you possibly know you were doing too much!! This worries me a little, we rely on their knowledge.
Dont worry about moaning that's what we are here forππ¬π
you will soon be back on track. I can imagine how disappointed you must feel, but chin up, and lots of love from us
Thanks for all your r eplies. what a comfort it is to have this forum.
When I saw the physio last week, I was still on full dose of ibuprofen, so felt no pain. I was determined to walk in to my consultant's appointment next week without my walking aids. Ah well, back to the drawing board!
I'm not too worried about the kidney situation because hopefully that will improve once I'm off ibuprofen completely. Next week I'm supposed to be given alternative pain relief.
I use Butrans patches, paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain. So waiting for different drug to take place of ibuprofen. But I can't remember what it was called. I hate having to take all these drugs!
Ask him for cocodamol which consists of following 30mg codeine and 500g paracetomol, I can't have ibuprofen because it affects my diabeties there have been when I have blood tests and it has shown poor liver function
Hi Anna, so sorry your feeling down, I am sure the hapy person I was in hospital with will appear again soon, we all have a few off days. Once the doctor changes the painkillers I am sure you will be back where you were, it's just a blip. I'm having a downer today too... think it must be a down day for all hippies. My leg is so swollen and painful the skin on my shin looks like glass, it hurts to do my excersises and to be perfectly honest I do think a lot of you are doing far better than I am at 7 weeks. I can't walk without my stick, apart from a few steps. I had to write my car off yesterday as it's 16 years old, but now needs more work than it's worth, so will have to look for another one. It's the first car I bought and I've had it from new now it has 120,000 happy miles on the clock. Oh god I must stop moaning I sound awful and so not like me........ Keep your chin up Anna and I'll try to do the same, together we will all get there to the end Love Gill xxxxxxxx
Thanks so much Gill! Sorry that you and your car are going through a bad time. Yes, you're so right, we'll get there eventually. Life's ful of little blips I guess, and that's what we're going through. Keep in touch! And chin up, eh?!
I am sure most of us do well when taking painkillers. I'm 10 weeks now and still ache during the day if I do too much and so have to have days when I rest. I also still take painkillers at night.
There was still a lot I didn't do at 7 weeks so don't be disheartened.
I have never been allowed to take Ibuprofen due to a small hiatus hernia
Co codamol has really worked for me pre op when the pain was really bad 500mg paracetamol and 30 mg Codeine and when I came out of hospital as well
Taking no painkillers daytime now and just 2 tablets night time
Don't beat yourself up about the amount of exercise you did - exercise is a major factor in the recovery process and I am sure will find alternative pain relief that will suit you better
it is probably a good thing that they found out that Ibuproven is effecting your kidneys - but then, most pain meds have nasty side effects - I get migraine head aches from Ibuproven en rapid heart beat - but there are others -
You are doing well ... so don't worry about that ... once you'll have aother pain killers, you will just continue your healing process - it is such a toss up . we all want to take less or stop the pain meds because we know that they are potent and again, have side effects - but then when we stop, we are in pain and oten so much so that we can't do anything ... so back we go and do better --- we = I of course ..
be very gentle with your self - have a peaceful night
Had my 7 week appointment with the consultant today. When I told him that I had been determined to walk in unaided but had had a blip over the weekend (picking peas and bending too far) he laughed and said 'It happens, bending more than 90Β° strictly forbidden!'.
So that's it for 6 months now. Lovely. But that reminded me that it will be January. I hate winter!
anna, so sorry to hear about your troubles. Instead of taking pain pills I strongly recomment Volterene pain cream. It takes about 30 minutes to work but it really does work. Get the 2%. It has a slightly different name in the UK, but your pharmisist will know. No doctors prescription necessary. I have intermittant arthritis pain in my knees ankles hands, and I rub in the Volterene Pain cream and it really does take the pain away. It doesn't last that long, but once my pain gets knocked down it seems to stay down for me. Give it a try.
Are you still in a lot of pain then? what did he advised you do against the pain ?
Oh that 90* rule ...I am 15 weeks post op and still fearful of breaking it .. so my grabber is still my best friend for picking up little things from floor ....
warm hug and be gentle with your self - thanks for sharing
I'd hardly got my bottom on the chair before it was time to go. I got the impression that he thought the pain would die down in time, which I'm sure it will. It's my spine that needs the new painkillers, but that's a whole other story for another forum!!
I know what you mean about bending. I was terrified of falling when I first came out of hospital. The trouble is that the grabber is never where you want it, or its on the floor, isn't it. Can't win. But we will, won't we?!
