I've been taking 1600mg dosage of cabamazepine/day for over 3 years but pain coming back

I have been talking the above dosage as mentioned above 4 times a day but the pain keeps recurring.I've also noticed that I feel drowsy and become unsteady on my feet.Is there something Iam doing wrong?I need advice fast!

I took magnesium glycinate 400 three times a day. It helped. You can do acupuncture with electric stimulation to the face. It helped me. You can also do prolotherapy (dextrose injections) to the face where you have pain. Naturalpathic Drs do that. I would stop meds eventually.

Magnesium glycinate 400 mg that is...

Are you sure. Sounds quite a large dosage. I used to take up to 1800mg of gabapentin per day about three years ago but since having balloon procedure all pain has gone, although it may come back. I would suggest to all trigeminal neuralgia sufferers to have the balloon procedure. Fairly painless and no side effects after after a few weeks.

Hi does the baloon procedure have a specific name? Thank you.

Hello what does the balloon procedure involve?

Henry if you can, please try a natural product called Protandim. A mixture of ashwagandha, milk thistle, turmeric etc. It is quite expensive! but works out at £1.32 a day. There are some good results from this. You can buy via this website and also find out lots about it. Look up  Janette Mc skimming on facebook. Add her and of you go . She offers great advice and follow up. She is a nutritionist and homeopath.  I take it myself. Good luck and I sincerely hope this helps. Takes a while to get into your system but, just go with it.

Dear Julia, thank you so much for the information.I will definitely try it.

Hello Nascar1,I will look into it.

I started out with 200 mg carbamazepine now and then and that took care of the problem. That was in 1983. By 1998, when I had the MVD operation and was cured permanently, I was taking 2,000 mg a day with little to no results. If an operation would help you, you are at that point. I could no longer stand the pain and the medication, which slurs your speech and causes other issues.

Good luck.

Our bodies get used to pain meds and they stop working. Maybe a good idea to go see Dr. so they can change your meds. I would get off my meds when my condition would go into remission. Had surgery no pain for now. Good Luck

Here is a link explaining the Balloon percutaneous operation for trigeminal neuralgia. The procedure is very old and is supposed to work by squeezing the trigeminal nerve so that its ability to transmit neural impulses, and therefore pain, is attenuated. There can be side affects of deadening of the face on the side where the operation is performed. Read the link below.

Details are on the internet but basically it involves pushing a wire up through your cheek into the brain and locating the trigeminal nerve. A balloon is inflated and pushes the nerve away from the offending obstruction.  This was procedure was recommended by a previous sufferer and worked fine for me. My specialist is in Melbourne at the Monash Centre. His name is Doctor Danks.

I tried every type of alternative medicine and therapy. None of them worked. Even purchased a device from Israel which I still have. Prescription drugs or an operation is the only answer. My cure was balloon procedure but the pain may return and I am keeping fingers crossed.

It should be on the internet. Look up balloon procedure for trigeminal neuralgia.

Ernestine, thank you for your advice.I think the biggest problem is my age.I have been told that surgery at over 50 is not advisable(I stand corrected),particularly in a place where there are no proper Neuro surgeons and facilities (sorry offence intended).

Both these factors affect me?

Dear gnm109,

You're absolutely right.I feel helpless. Too much medication and surgery are not very good for me especially due to my advanced age.

What next for me?

geoffre35113,

Iam truly grateful for the information.

I use CBD -cream & drops they help keep my nerves and muscles from being tight, without the side affects of the strong meds.  They work like muscle relaxants without making your mind foggy.  😊

Thank you so much.I will try that immediately.
