I 've had depression for most of my life and I am 67 yrs old .

It's been so long I can't even remember what the doctors back then perscribed for me except Valium. I was taking Paxil for many years and had to quit it 3 0r 4 months ago because anxiety attacks were getting worse. I don't seem to have depression but anxiety and panic attacks took over and I am wondering if I am being perscribed the wrong medication ??. These attacks sure are scary as a lot of you out there know. This Citalopram sounds promising.

Hi. I'm 36 yrs of age. I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. Started taking citalopram in February of this year. And let me tell ya.... it has been rough. Bout two weeks ago it finally kicked in, I guess. No more anxious feeling and no more panick attacks. For now anyway. It was well worth the wait for me. Although I know we are all different. It's worth a shot. Takes patience though. Best of luck.

Hello alphonsus

Sorry to hear you've been like this for most of your life, but I'm sure you'll feel a real difference with Citalopram.  I had been ill with anxiety, depression etc for 15 years with all sorts of meds that didn't help, and it was only when I started SSRI's did I recover. I couldn't believe it!  I've now been well for around 16 years.

These meds take a long time to work and they might make you feel worse before you feel any benefit.  Just go with it and keep on with them, and I'm sure you'll start feeling better.  It took around 3-4 months for me.  Might sound a long time, but it's not compared to how long I'd been ill.

I wish you the best.

Hello,  I am sorry your suffering for so long. I have had depression nearly 40 years on and off. Strangly i didn't suffer anxiety or panic attacks till last year. I started Citalopram and after the initial first couple of weeks i have been so much better. I have had only a couple of panic attacks in 10 months and anxiety is mostly the same. So for me it's been great.  I hope you find the right treatment for you weather you try citalopram or something else.

Best wishes.

Elizabeth.

Did you have any experience with using Paxil?. I have been taking it for many years with little result.

No I've never taken Paxil, but note it's paroxetine which is the same as Seroxat which I took.  Seroxat was the first SSRI I took but it didn't agree with me as I had anger issues whilst on it, and changed to another which sorted out the problem.
