hi everyone again. Had a RTHR 16 weeks ago with total success. However afterwards within 4 weeks started having groin pain in other side, quite uncomfortable. My consultant suggested cortisone injection for diagnostic purposes more than anything, which I had done yesterday. The results are good pain has gone feel great. I,m guessing that means I need this hip replaced too now, but wondered if anyone else has had these injections and f so how long did it last?

Same thing happened to me. The cortisone injection lasted approx 2 years and then I had that hip replaced.

Steroidal injections work sometimes and don't help sometimes. And how long it works for anyone is the big question. You can only have it every 3 months and if it works the first time that is no assurance it will work the next. Just guessing here but you could have tendinitis in that groin from walking to Compensate from before your surgery or after. And again, if it is tendinitis, gentle stretching is all you should. Anti-inflammatory medication will help as much if not more than, pain mess. Always let your body determine how much is enough. Physical therapy should not hurt while doing it and should ALWAYS be followed by a day of rest. It is possible to aggravate already tender body parts or cause additional pain where none existed.
In my case the injection left me pain free for precisely 2 weeks and then the pain came back with avengence until it subsided again. I am not someone who suffers from depression or paranoia but at the same time my mood switched completely; it was horrible at the time. My work colleagues wanted me to see my GP, but as you have to wait 4-5 weeks to see ours in Hampshire, there was no point. Don't know if cortisone injections should do this but that is what happened.

I'm sorry to hear about that and hope you are improving now. As regards to having to wait four to five weeks to see a GP that is terrible. At my GP surgery if we ring in at 8.15 we can get an appointment to see a GP the same day. Usually subject to ones GP of choice being available on the day we can see them

First injection lasted 2 months. Second injection lasted 2 days. Got the hip replaced and so glad I did

Sorry to hear they effected you like that.
The shots mixed my brain up so much. I ask dr to lower level or just didn't do anymore. Its hard too describe the effects but it sped my brain up to much !!!
I can't believe it takes that long to see gp that's terrible mine if I'm troubled will always work me in that day

Hi Angel,it sounds as though your bad hip is in trouble as the operated one is compensating for the bad hip .Take it slowly & please take pain meds,don't rush into over doing things.Regards Amanda h

they seem very hit and miss these injections don't they, and I think what we,be all gone through it's not surprising we get mood swings too..... I hope you get sorted soon Sylvia !

i think you,re right Jill I have been pushing my other side, but have been told it does need replacing also! I will enjoy being pain free until the injection gives out on me, be it next month or year thanks though for your advice x
I had one and last about 10 days be pain free. Than pain started again.
Every one is different. My GP decided time for replecmat and i had one last October left hip and right one to go for replecmant as well. I hope your incection last longer be pain fre. Wishing you luck.

Hi there.
I've had 3 infections in 9 mths and unfortunately neither has worked. But as other's have said everyone is difficult. I've developed calcification of the tendon due they think to scar tissue which is causing the inflammation so looks like like an operation is the only option. I had THR over a year ago.

Hi all x I'm a newbie x I had 5 cortisone injection in and around my hip joint over the space of 18months one helped pain for about 4 weeks other not a lot really so now on list for a hip replacement
Richard - you and Dav were asking about the 4-5 weeks wait. That is standard for an appointment. You can phone and I did pick up the phone when my colleagues told me to but you get a message telling you that they are under enormous pressure and really if you can go anywhere else for help please do so. When I registered my elderly mother a letter that came with the form told me again that they really didn't want new patients and that it was only because the government made them take patients that they were. So it is rather off putting before you even speak to anyone. Then triage has to phone you back and decide whether you can see someone, otherwise this is where a routine appointment one a month ahead comes in. It is not worth the hassle unless you are seriously ill.
I used to work in the countryside and you would just go down to the village on the day the doctor was coming and wait in someone's living room that was used by the doctor when he came out from teh local town. Simple in the 1970s.
The effects of the injection did clear up in the end, but I don't think I will be having another one! I should have accepted the THR when first asked if I would like one.

I'm really horrified by your confirmation about protracted appointments to see your doctor. If you had the time and the strength to do this I would be tempted to see your MP for starters and make a huge fuss. Such delays are just not acceptable. Your story makes me feel so fortunate that I can get a doctors appointment the same day.
