when do you know when it is a good time to come off medication? My anxiety is nothing like it was before. Taking 50mg sertraline for a couple of years-with a 6 month break. I still get palpitations from time to time, but I no longer have the health anxiety over anything that doesn't feel right about my body. I can no accept my bodies aches and pains. I have low iron so don't know how much that has been making things worse-low iron due to heavy periods. I also don't know if I am perimenopausal and much that is having its two pennies worth-so's to speak. I am 50 years strong (smiles) next week.
I would love to hear from anyone who has successfully decided to stop medication due to anxiety improvement.
I was on sertraline (lustral) 20 years ago for a few weeks. SSRIs make me more anxious and suicidal. I cannot take then now anyway as i have cardiac illness. I take diazepam.
From my knowledge doctors usually prescribe antidepressants as a 6 month course and I think a gradual reduction to ease withdrawal
Happy Birthday for next week I'm 46 today, only a few years behind you.

Hi, I've stopped taking meds several times over the last 10 years. The withdrawal symptoms are different for everyone but in my experience (several close friends) sertraline withdrawal symptoms are not usually too bad. As long as you think you're ready and your doctor agrees then go for it. Just make sure you do it relatively slowly, I think with sertraline the usual way is to drop to every other day. While you've been taking the meds have you developed other ways of coping with your anxiety or avoiding situations that avoid it? As long as you think you can cope without the meds then give it a go. We'll all be here to help you through it too
