Ibandronic acid

I have been taking the above about 6 months after having been nagged by my rheumy. All has been fine till this month, I have felt rotten fatigue, dizzy, upset stomach and constipation all side effects according to the internet has anyone else experienced this and if so how long does it last. I might add that I couldn't take Alendronic Acid either for the same side effects

Hi, am sorry that you are not feeling the best.  I have never heard of ibandronic acid.  I refused to take Alendronic Acid until I have a Dexa Scan and even then will probably not take it.  I think you need to elaborate a bit more on what your diagnosis is and what medication you are taking.  Hang around for a while on this forum and someone with more knowledge will be able to answer your questions.  Good luck on your journey.  Regards Pat

If you couldn't take AA then it was very likely that you were going to suffer similar side-effects with ibandronic acid - it is also a bisphosphonate.

Had you had a dexascan before being nagged? If not, why not? If yes, what were the reading? Do you really need it?

Yes I did have a dexascan, the readings were in the main osteopenia but some osteoporosis in the spine. that however was 2 years ago since then I was coerced by a practice nurse at our then GPs and also the rheumy into taking Ibandronic acid. I didn,t and still don't want to take any of them but I have been given all sorts of dire warnings if I don't. I will add that we now don't have a GP there are only locums avaiable at our surgery so I really don't have anyone to discuss it with.

Don't rule out locums - they often see a new aspect for a patient who has got into a rut. But you are going to have problems with bisphosphonates - they need to step up to the next level, injections at the very least.

Are you in the UK? If so then google the National Osteoporosis Society UK - they have an amazing helpline where they will talk it all through with you. If you are in the US they must have an equivalent.

Hi Eileen dexascan reading as follows July 2013.

AP spine L1-L4 -2.8

Femoral neck-2.8

total hip -1.8

presumably need it but have enquired re 6 monthly injection but can't find the letter that says what of.

You need another now after 2 years - to see if things have progressed or stayed the same. And then you should discuss it with a proper expert - not a GP and not the practice nurse. And having failed the first 2 hurdles - you do get to have something higher up NICE's hierarchy of bone building drugs.
