I have just recently started the FODMAP diet and newly diagnosed with IBS. In the last few days I have started to get headaches in the late evening and night. These could be tension related not sure? Any experience others may have had or feedback would be appreciated.
Anne
You can get headaches with IBS though not everyone will experience this. Being newly diagnosed and starting a challenging diet that you don’t know anything about and whether it will work. can be stressful and stress can cause headaches.
I was so relieved at my IBS diagnosis, all my stress immediately disappeared so I didn’t experience stress symptoms like headaches.
I’ve been following a Low Fodmap eating plan for about 3 years and it has helped me enormously. Your headaches might be related to withdrawal symptoms? For example, I used to drink a lot of coffee but significantly reduced the amount when I started the Low Fodmap diet, and I did tend to get headaches in the evening as a result of caffeine withdrawal. The headaches disappeared after a week or two. It might not be caffeine in your case but it could well be a food or drink that you have cut out or reduced.

Tension could definitely be the cause. However I know this diet is very restrictive it may be possible you are not eating enough and or you are eating but because it's lower calories you are not getting enough nutrition and calories. Also, it may be hydration. Make sure you are staying hydrated. Because the diet is low carb low sodium you may not be holding onto water enough.
Hopefully this helps
Hi Anne, I have been right through the fodmap diet and come out the other side. I can't remember headaches though never. I have facial neuralgia and remember feeling pain in my face a lot and starving! I'd check you may have cut out the wrong thing and your body may be deplete of something. What have you cut out? Put 1 ingredient back in at a time to see if the headaches go. It's hard the fodmap diet, I only discovered it was fibre not any specific foods on fodmap. Good luck though.
Thank you for the information, I appreciate it.
Sometimes IBS itself can cause headaches.
