IBS and pain under both ribs

Hello

Ive been diagnosed with IBS since April.

Now I get an urge and tummy ache before I need to rush to the toilet in the morning.

Ive been getting a feeling of discomfort under my ribs, off and on recently and wondered if this can be caused by IBS?  It feels like a band at the bottom of my ribcage and it definitely is under both ribs.

Your symptoms are typical of IBS and can be felt almost anywhere in the body.  The dash to the loo in the morning is common and is known as the morning rush.

I can literally hear the food moving through my body after eating too.

I have had pain under the ribs with IBS and heartburn. It can even affect your joints.  The pain is never in the one place at any one time.

I can write the same like Philippa. I have ibs since 2014. Try some yoga, and deep breething, it may help you as well. Buy some probiotics in the helth shop. It's good for your bowel.

Hi. I had IBS diagnosed years ago but then it turned out I actually had auto immune disease. Now that I am treated for that I don"t get the IBS symptoms at all ever. I had heartburn and all of that too. And it interests me you mention pain in your rib cage. Do you have other health issues going on at all??

Anyone with IBS joint pain and this rib cage pain should probably seek another diagnosis. Especially if they have other health issues. Lot of the time we are being diagnosed incorrectly. IBS is sometimes a catch all for symptoms which they aren't able to diagnose.

I saw an endocrinologist who completely missed that I had vasculitis. He had totally failed to understand my symptoms. And also it does not show up on scans. When I was diagnosed with the auto immune disorder, I went back to the endocrinologist and told him. I asked why he hadn't recognised the symptoms. He got embarrassed and said he had never seen anyone with the illness before! Maybe that is because we are not being properly diagnosed!

There can be many symptoms of auto immune disease. Major symptoms can include fatigue IBS type symptoms, joint pain, muscle pain, chest pain or episodes of wheeziness, heart palpitations are also common and low level fever.

With the rib cage pain....please have a read up on costochondritis and see if that looks like your symptoms.

I had costochondritis for three months and then a few months on from that I got IBS.

Well Philippa you have a definite auto immune profile there. Costochondritis is caused by inflammation in the chest cartilege. That and IBS are classic symptoms of auto immune. 

Any other problems like fatigue or migraine ?

My problems started after chiropractory and deep tissue massage.  I got intense fatigue and joint pain immediately afterwards and I always wondered if my immune system had overreacted because the pain and fatigue lasted nine months.  Although this has largely gone, if I over exert myself it comes back.

Well, saw my GP.

My ESR is now 3 and CRP has come down from 20 to 16.

He is testing me for autoimmune diseases.

He thinks the discomfort under my ribs may be indigestion?  Ive got some medication to take.

I need to go back in a month.

I think sometimes these things are coincidental. When we start feeling unwell and symptoms are mysterious we look for things to pin it on to. Might have exacerbated the problem but I am not sure it caused it.

hmmm sceptical about that but glad he is testing for auto immune issues. Would want to know what he is doing as a gp can't diagnose that.

It is quite possible and I am quite an anxious person. Although I did feel unwell immediately after these treatments when I had been in very good shape before which is strange.

I have these symptoms as part of my IBS. I get sharp stabbing pains under my ribs followed by a major urge or should that be plural

Hi Margaret. I'm curious about your experience getting diagnosed with vasculitis. I've had really uncharacteristic pains for IBS but have been given that diagnosis because testing keeps coming back negative for anything else. Diet doesn't help my symptoms at all, nor do medications. I just looked up vasculitis, and it actually sounds a lot more like my symptoms - occasional fever, severe pain in ribs, around back, and the longer it goes on, the further the pain spreads - now from my shoulders through fingers, and down my groin into my legs. I've also recently started getting heart palpitations, high blood pressure, and racing pulse, but my cardiac workup is coming back normal. Now the pain goes up into my throat and ears, and I'm getting episodes of confusion and disorientation. Doctors have just about given up on me.

What were your symptoms like, and how did you go about getting a diagnosis? Your GP or a specialist?

Hello margaret ..I have almost all the symptoms except for fever. I have palpitations. I get really out of breath some times that i think is my sinus issue. But my breathlessnesss is not normal sinus it causes panic attacks. I have muscle pain,  joint pain and fatigue. Obvious that  I have IBS symptoms also.
