Hi guys
The doc diagnosed me with ibs last year when ib had 2 days of pain lasting 4 hours each day. He put me on mebeverine which did help. I dont take it anymore and have had nothing until Friday when i woke at 5 am with what felt like a cold stomach. Then from 6 til 9 i was in soo much pain just under rib cage and back pain. Mebeverine didnt help and i ended up with a hot water bottle and trying different yoga poses to relieve the pain. I couldnt stand or sit and had to keep moving around and felt really sick as well. I was a bit windy but burping. Going to the loo did not improve my symptoms and have had no change in stool movements or colour. The pain suddenly ended around 9 am after taking some paracetamols.
I dont believe this is ibs or does anyone else have the same symptoms?
Hi,
you're right, it doesn't sound like IBS but people vary with their symptoms, but what prompted me to reply was you say you had pain under your rib cage and back pain. This sounds very much like the symptoms my hubby had when he had gall stones. I think maybe you should check with your doctor.
Hi Linda
The doc sent me for scans for gallstones and nothing at all was there 😞 liver spleen and everything else was showing up good on the scan hence he then gave me ibs diagnosis
Sometimes i think mine is more serious than ibs and go to thinking cancer right away, but after reading most people's symptoms on ibs i'm sure ibs is the culprit.
I've also had pain under my rib cage all the way down my stomach, this is fairly new to me.....i've had this for years but it seems to be getting worse with age.
Thanks joan...this pain doesnt go into my stomach its like a vice just under the rib cage that goes all around to my back...its like constant labour pains. The pain is always there but can feel what feels like cramps at times and thats when it major hurts.
Hiya
I like you have been diagnosed with IBS but have been doubtful about the diagnosis and worry constantly it could be something more sinister. I have had a pain in my right side which at it's worst extends from right down in my pelvis up to my ribcage. Also I get lower back pain like period pain and sometimes my right shoulder too. It's all on the right side only and I never get the huge cramping front stomach pains most commonly associated with IBS. The pains pretty much never go away completely. I initially had no changes in toilet habit either, although of late stools are harder and smaller and less frequent. However after having monitored my diet for some time now I am starting to think that as I have the constipating type of IBS this could be due to my colon becoming impacted on that side. I'm not quite 100% sure yet but i think what may work is avoiding heavy/clogging foods like bread, drinking ALOT more water and taking fibrogel and eating prunes regularly! It seems to be easing things off at the moment, pain and bloating easing and becoming more regular. Anyway the point I wanted to make was simply that your symptoms may well be IBS and maybe if you try the same eating as me it may help if you have the same type of IBS?
Thanks louise....im not worried about it being something sinister as that has been ruled out buy ultrascans. I had two attacks last october and had no major problems at all until friday. I can and have been eating what i want ..however a prune smoothie that i usually have on a morning one day gave me some aches so i didnt have it for a morning and then started drinking it again and all is fine. Same with a doughnut i couldnt eat one one day but then was fine the next. I still have a dull ache under my right rib where the pain was mainly centred....this is right where the gallbladder is...but again they have been ruled out.
Very strange i think.
Hope it eases off more for you over the next few days. Keep drinking plenty and i would be interested to hear how things go for you as the site of your pain does seem to be very similar to mine. Good luck
Thanks lousie and i always drink loads.
Hi, I hve same symptoms. Pain so bad I am usually sick. Cant stand or lie down, going to the loo doesnt ease it either. Usually lasts five hours before passing and after an episode of stress. Seeing a doc in a few weeks :-( hope you get to the bottom of yours and it eases!! xx
Sorry to hear that poppy
its awful and i can really sympathise with you. I cant say stress is the cause of mine as im not under any and was nicely fast asleep boohoo.
Good luck at the doctors
Im also happily asleep then get woken, only attacks seem to be early morning, but the only common trend is a stressful event the day before: family funeral, long haul flights when we have tons of paperwork (roadtrip!) and extremely bad day in the office. Cant find a common link with food...
Food is not a major problem for me either though as stated earlier some days are fine and other days the same food can give me a little jip but nothing extreme..even water can make me gurgle and cause pain if swallowed to quic but im sure thats normal.for everyone.
Hi Joan...what side is the pain under your rib cage? I've had IBS for nearly 30 years. 18 months ago, things changed. It started with chronic pain under my rib cage on the left side. This pain is there all the time. I started to think this was something a lot worse that IBS. Recently I have read that IBS can change with age and/or menopause. I'm 49. The pain moves to my back, along my stomach from left to right and also down my left and right side and down to the groin area and hips. I've had ultrasound scans and x-rays recently with negative results. The only medication I take is laxido which helps keep my regular but does not relieve pain. Doctors still insist it's my IBS. I hope they are right!
Hi Fiona, mine is on the RH side but otherwise symptoms exactly as yours. I too have had ultrasound and X-rays but nothing found.
Hi poppet1983,
I know this is an old thread but just wondering if you got to the bottom of your symptoms?

Hello,
I have similar symptoms.
All bloods, scans and tests clear and normal. Exception is a polyp they found in my lower colon but waiting to see someone about that.
They have decided in IBS-D but I'm convinced. I have attackes of severe pain on my left side. I'm also suffering on my right side aswell.
Have you had anymore investigations or any answers?
