Hi. I have recebtly been diagnosed with Irritable bowel syndrome. Initially i thought gluten was the problem however after taking blood tests for celiac disease etc this has been ruled out. I am really tired of all the ibs symptoms and have come across the low fodmap diet .
I wanted To see if anyone else with ibs has tried it and what their experiences with it have been. Thanks.
Hi Zara
I followed the low fodmap diet for 4 weeks after receiving advice from my GP and a dietitian. It was supposed to be followed for 6 weeks to see if symptoms would disappear, but after 4 weeks I had a severe flare up of bloating and felt very uncomfortable (even though I had been following the diet to the letter). I have also since kept food diary's but have not been able to determine any patterns relating to any specific foods or food groups.
So yeh. It didn't work for me, but I think if you haven't tried it, it would be worth investigating, to see what sort of results you get over the period of 4-6 weeks.
All the best
Paul
Hi Paul. Thanks so much for your reply. I will have a go.
have sent you a link via PM. Good luck.
Hi I know from experience how you are feeling. Yes do look at the Low Fod map diet and try it. From what I have read it is not always so successful for those who mainly suffer constipation but good for diarrhea so bear this in mind. You might find it will be case of just seeing what foods aggravate it and make sure you have enough of the right fibre for you and plenty of water. Hope things improve for you.
Hi Mind my asking what meds you are/were taking ? Some fillers and binders can cause these problems. For example corn, maize starch.sorbitol etc.
I had post infectious ibs and the diet really helped. It stopped me constantly going to the toilet and now I have improved and introduced most foods. But I still get trapped gas and symptoms
So it doesn't fully make things go away but improves it. I guess it depends how bad your ibs is though as everyone is different
