I've been diagnosed with IBS for a few years but I don't think I've had issues with mucus in my stool that I can tell, or at least not large amounts. But yesterday and now today as well this new symptom has popped up. It's been feeling almost like a bout of diarrhea but I'm only passing globs of mucus (sorry if TMI...). The last week I've been forgetting to take my probiotics and other supplements and haven't been up on my water intake; and I'm on my period. I know all of that can, and has, lead to IBS flare ups for me. Regardless it still seems odd that this feels like diarrhea but I'm only passing mucus, and as I've never had this symptom I'm a little... concerned. Anyone help me out who has this sort of symptom in addition to IBS/periods??
I have never passed mucus with my IBS, but it is a common IBS symptom. Try not to worry. Everyone gets anxious when they get a new symptom. Periods can also worsen IBS. My periods used to make my IBS more painful, now this had stopped.
so it can get better over time??
If you avoid any triggers such as foods that disagree with you, or stress, it can get better
good to know. I’ve gone to a dietitian when they weren’t terribly helpful so I’m not really sure what my trigger foods are aside from dairy (I’ve even tried a food journal). though I’ve been eating more refined foods the last week cause of some stuff, so maybe that’s part of the problem.
stress/anxiety is almost always present at least in small amounts though I try my best to manage it.
a lot of the time though things seem to randomly go wrong and set something off. It’s very frustrating. it’s good to know things can get better though.
hi ryn, i read your post and noted a symptom that i used to get with the ‘so called’ ibs i apparently had! i am coeliac and when my ibs was bad i used to pass mucua when i was constipated. see your doctor though because your bowel pattern has altered. good luck!
I don’t really eat wheat cause I’m just not much on bread or pasta, etc and a lot of my issues do track with IBS, but I did make an appt with my doc, thanks! though things seem to be on the up tick, this morning at least. maybe my system was thrown off by the perfect storm of period, stomach bug, and forgetting my probiotics/sufficient water intake.
hi ryn, at least you may have an idea what was causing this. see what your doctor suggests? good luck, you need to find what works for you!
