Ibs

I am 19 and for the last 7 months I've had diarreah everyday. At first it wasn't so bad and I would have stomach pain and have to go to the toilet frequently of a morning but then I would be okay to go out throughout the day although of a night it would return I was embarrassed at first but then decided to go to the doctor who said I had ibs gave me some tablets and said to see him again in a month, the tablets didn't help at all I was taking Imodium also so I could go out but became addicted so my mom told me to stop taking them. I then went to visit my dad for a couple of months but whilst I was away they saw the everyday struggle I had and took me to see their doctor they also gave me tablets for ibs which did not help I had blood tests for intolerance to wheat and gluten and for celiac and chrons disease which all came back normal I had an internal assessment but she found nothing abnormal. When I returned home I went back to see my doctor who told me although my test came back clear to wheat intolerance to avoid eating it and drink actimel once a day. I left the doctors and went straight to sign up to another practise although when I went there the doctor was very rue and told me I shouldn't have bothered changing doctors as she also thinks its ibs but tablets she gave me haven't helped either I had more blood tests to test for a stomach infection and also a stool sample but both came back normal. I've started beginning to feel very depressed I have a 3 year old son who I can't do much with these days as I can rarely leave the house I feel this is ruining my life I can't go out to work as I'm constantly ill I don't leave the house I do all my shopping online I don't see my friends I don't take my son out to do the things we should be doing at his age sometimes I wake up at 4-5 in the morning almost crying as the pain is so bad and have to sit on the toilet for sometimes over an hour it's knocking my confidence so much but I don't believe this is ibs but don't know what else it could be. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Sophie , how are you ? So sorry no one has responded to your post , if you want some help I will try to help you , there are lots of things you can do to help yourself , and there are different organisations that can help you too , , post me a reply sophie as soon as possible

Hiya thank you for commenting I've tried changing my diet but that hasn't helped either no tablets have worked the doctors aren't helping I'd really appreciate any advice you have

Hi sophie thanks for getting back to me, you say you have had various tests , that all show nothing abnormal , have you had a helicobacter stool test done as well , have you had a scan on your abdomen ? , and blood tests , do you work Sophie.,?, and are you stressed out with worry ? , have you looked at the support groups for ibs sufferers ,, what meds have you tried , colofac /buscopan , i take this and its good but im maximum dose , two tablets , up to three times a day , do you have acid indigestion , and what type of diet do you have , do you take an vitamins or supplements ?

I've had a stool sample don't know exactly what for though but the results came back normal my doctor just dismissed the idea of having a scan. I don't work but I really want to get into work as my son will be starting school next year but I'm scared I won't even be well enough to take him in the mornings I'm stressed as I stay in almost everyday as I never feel confident enough to actually go out I can't remember the last time I took my son out or went into town to do some shopping I haven't looked at any support groups and I can't remember tge names of all tablets but she gave be peppermint oil tablets and alverine are the 2 I remember haven't tried them tablets you've said I don't think I don't have indigestion and I'm eating as healthy as I can mainly because i want to lose weight but was hoping it would help but it hasn't I'm getting so depressed and fed up now just want it to go and I take multi vitamin tablets

Hi Sophie , the stool test i imagine would be to see if you have had a bacterial infection of the stomach this casues chronic stomach pain and gastritis ,its called helicobacter pylori , its very common and many people have it and it causes no problems , but many people become ill and it has to be treated with antibiotics to kill it , it is usually sucessfull , i imagine that is what the doc was testing for , you could ask for an endoscopy , so they could look into your tummy , its not as bad as it sounds honestly , and if you went back to your doctor it may be worth saying ,you are still having problems and your quality, dont of life is poor and this is also affecting your son , , are your bowels ok , ? Is there any history of stomach complaints , diabetes , chrohns disease in your family ? , you should either write or go back to your doctor sophie , is there a lady doctor you could see , tell them you want further investigations doing , scan , , endoscopy etc , and possibly a colonoscopy to check your bowel ? Have you any family or friends sophie , ? Have you got a health visitor ? Get back to me please

I do have family and friends but don't feel I want to tell them how down its making me feel as I feel stupid and some of my friends rhink I'm over reacting I just want to be able to go out and do normal things I have a woman doctor but she seems to just want to keep telling me it's ibs but I genuinely don't think it is lately I have days were I can't get up as I feel lightheaded and I'm aching all over with a headache and yes that sounds right they were testing for that infection but it was fine there's no history of any of those in my family I went to the job centre and asked about working when my son goes to school as I'm currently on income support and would have to switch over to job seekers but she said if its been longer than a year it's classed as a disability but I really don't want to have to do that and I don't even think my doctor would let me do that my friends keep telling me to just go into a&e and ask for the scan if my doctor won't give me one

Sophie you need to try antother doctor in your practise and explain you would like a scan and an appoint, ent with a gasteoenterologiist , your quality of life is being affected by your stomach condition , despite the tests oming back normal , yo could also requset an endoscopy , and also a colonoscopy , to put your mind at rest , if you get no joy , get in touch with your local patient liaison service , you can go through them and they will act on your behalf

You need to try and get out sophie for our sons sake , specially as he will be going to school soon ,, staying in and hiding away is not helping you

Try some buscopan , 3.19 from boots , go to the website have a look , i have tried colpermin , it was no good at all and made my gastritis terriblle , if you are able to buy yakult , that may help too , drink lots of water , stay off coffee , try not to smoke (if you smoke) , and walking is excellent for ibs sophie , you will feel better just to get put of the house for some fresh air , even if its only round the block with your little boy , do you have a local sure start or playgroup you could go to , or a friend you could meet at a local park with your son , break this cycle that you are in sophie , and things will improve , but if you have no one you think can help you youve got to do it for yourself and your little boy . Try the buscopan sophie , , let me know how you get on , try and find sure start , try the library , or your doctors , and find out about your local health visitor sophie , she should be able to help you , and dont be afraid to ask for help , i always said if you have had a baby you can do anything , you owe it to yourself and your little boy , so come on ... Make a change

Looking forward to hearing from you soon

I agree totally with Helen40. IBS has a very strong link to lifestyle especially stress. If it is IBS exercise e.g walks in the park and diet are essential. We are not always aware when we are stressed. But your history suggest it could be something you are taking orally on a regular basis (chocolate and dairy products possible causes) or some stress in your daily life. Are you on the pill if so might be worth getting this reviewed as some contraceptive pills can cause diarrhoea, weight gain and low mood as side-effects.

Hope this helps. Will keep track of your progress.

30 years later realised my IBS was related to a medication for chronic utis . Since not been taking it I am

back to normal .Check side effects & interactions on medications .Sometimes you can only tell by stopping.
