Hi. Could anyone help. I have had severe IBS for ten years now. I have tried every plan going and all scans and also biopsies are clear. No one knows what is wrong. I could eat exactly the same thing every day and some days be fine and some days be terrible. It seems to have no rhyme or reason.
it is so severe I cannot make it to the toilet at least 4 times a month. I do it in the bed. it is truly terrible.
please - has anyone got IBS so severe and if so, has ANYTHING at all helped?
Has your GP prescribed any medications for your problem.
I do not know what to suggest, do you feel it could be a form of Anxiety.
All I can do is suggest you talk to your GP and explain how distressing you condition has become. Further tests may need to be taken

Hi Helena,
Just to say you're not alone. Unfortunately there is such a broad range of symptoms and some of us fall on the extreme end. All I can say is I depend on medicine everyday, which helps but obviously doesn't cure it. I take anti spasmodics, anti emetics and painkillers. Imodium/prunes depending on what it feels like.... I can do the entire Bristol stool chart in a day. My symptoms go well beyond food, I could eat anything and get a flare up. As Bob says it's an anxiety thing too and it's a vicious circle. I do a lot of yoga and meditation. And take a lot of rest, I've had to completely change the way that I live and accept that I live with a dibilitating illness. Accepting it as an illness has helped a lot too.
Have you been checked for bile malabsorption?
Hi, do you eat probiotic yogurt or fermented foods or take multi strain probiotics?, IBS in my experience is all about trial and error in finding something that may relief symptoms, I've tried all sorts of things some help and then they don't help, some make you worse, I've got mine down to sourdough bread, chia seeds, Kefir a strong multi strain probiotic drink, and very much follow the FODMAP diet, I don't think you can cure IBS it's about lessening symptoms, I've tried different medication with little help or made me worse, I reckon gut flora is a big factor pretty fascinating things about bacteria you can't survive without it.
The best thing you can try is the Low Fodmap diet, Imodium or codeine for the diarrhoea and stress management techniques. Rice or bananas can help to firm up stools too. Ask for a different antispasmodic for the pain.
You could ask for a SECHAT scan to see if the diarrhoea is being caused by Bile acid malabsorption. This can be treated and is often misdiagnosed as IBS.
