I’m trying to diagnose my thigh and knee pain as it is not getting any better.
Have any of you dealt with this (ITBS) before or after your hip THR?
It’s very common in runners. It’s pain between the hip and outer thigh/knee.

Hi there, yes as the inflammation and healing of deeper tissues started, my muscles from the hip down to my knee on the out side thigh hurt so much that even bending my knee was painful. I iced, use rub 535, massaged and pushed forward trying to bend a little bit more. Every muscle in my body was tight and aching from not doing my regular 1 hr exercise daily routine. Once I got into the hot pool and started moving more, it started easing and going away. Are sure you don't lock your knee I was told at physiotherapy. While we are not bearing weight, we shift how we distribute weight and that affects everything. Now that I am working on my hip abductors, when I push too hard, the tightness on the outside comes back so I have to massage and stretch, let it relax and push forward.
Forgot to mention that my leg was 1.5 inch shorter and after surgery it was made same length as other leg. The trending , the muscles, the nerves all had to stretch, that was the most painful part of it.
Hi Claudia, at first I couldn’t lock my knee. I am 4 wks post op and now able to do it.
I started walking a mile a day a week ago and 3 days later this pain got worse. And now when walking I don’t get very far on that. I noticed it actually feels when I bend I bend my knee.
Anyways when I came across this on the internet and I read the symptoms describee what I feel i was pretty sure that’s what i have. It not only affects runners but people who have a pelvic tilt; which I do and if your hips are off, which I did, your legs are not the same length etc.
Claudia how was this diagnosed for you? Just by your symptoms or an MRI?
Hi. The doctor had me in at 12 weeks and when touching my leg he could feel the tightness. I was given painkillers that I had to take before and after physiotherapy. massage, muscle relaxants, doing stretches 4 times a day, physiotherapy. Not walking as much till the muscles relaxed. I spend 2 hours in a hot pool every day. It has taken a year for the muscles to stretch and grow.
Oh gosh, I can’t imagine going that long to get these muscles fixed. ☹️
