I reported earlier I have groin pain and upper buttocks 1 year after THR. Have any of you had irratation of the iliopsoas tendon after TH surgery. Thanks.
Hi there,
Sorry to hear that your having that pain it's definitely not good trying to get through the day with that pain. I do have the same pain so i can only tell you about my experience with this issue.
Yes i had so much pain in my groin i couldn't walk, stand or sit for longer than 5-10mins, i constantly complained to my surgeon and he said it was from the tendons rubbing over the front of the hip replacement, he said usually it settles down after a year as the rubbing wears the tendon thinner then the pain should stop. Well in my case it didn't do they injected cortisone into my ILLOPSOAS AND ADDUCTOR TENDONS as i also couldn't part my legs without great pain.
I went to a follow up appointment 6wks later still no relief so the next step was surgery to have those tendons cut or as they say a release. All i can say is it didn't help as i still have the pain and my surgeon said there was nothing else he could do and I'm now coming up to 4yrs post TLHR, i couldn't live with the pain so my last option was a spina paddle nerve stimulator which i had done in February which has given me some relief of the chronic nerve pain i have that i have in my groin, buttock and down my leg. They found I'm one of the unlucky people that has a faulty cup thst sqeauks and caues me grion pain when bending
with my ceramic on ceramic TLHR and at this stage my surgeon won't replace the faulty cup as my body has been through so much and my surgeon said i risk losing my TLHR.
I'm now 49yo and i use to have a very active life with horses before my TLHR i never would of thought 4yrs post op that i would still be on crutches and not active at all, I'm sorry if it all sound bad but honestly if your surgeon isn't listening to you i would seek another opinion, i hear so many complaining of the same pain or issues and some Doctors just say the pain is in your imagination and it's not the pain is real so seek another opinion.
Thank you for the response. You certainly have had a rough time with it. I have been having the pain in groin and top of buttocks for a few months and it seems to have gotten worse recently. I am going to the surgeon for 1 year followup net week and wanting to talk to him about my issues but to be able to ask the right questions. I have been researching the pain I have and discovered the tendon problem and wanted to ask if others have had the problem.
Hi, just read Sue's story which sounded awful. I discovered this site about 4 months ago and posted about the groin pain I had which started 6 weeks after I had a half hip replacement. I'm an NHS patient and was referred for an MRI. I had to sleep in a chair as if my knee bent in my sleep it was so painful straightening it out. Getting upright was difficult too but sometimes I got shooting pains in my groin when I was doing nothing. If I yawned I'd get a painful spasm!
I was investigated for labral tears but the MRI showed inflammation so I was referred for a steroid injection into iliopsoas tendon. However my doctor prescribed Baclofen which is a muscle relaxer as my leg was so tight by this time. Incredibly the spasms stopped and I was just left with soreness in the tendon. Over the next few weeks that eased too so by the time I went for the steroid injection the doctor administering it suggested I wait to see if it healed itself. I'd read that the injection isn't always successful so was happy to agree. It's been 4 months but it's now very low level discomfort. I know everyone is different and I worried myself sick thinking I was going to need more surgery. I know from this site that groin pain is so common and there are lots of possible reasons for it eg impinged tendons, crossed over "snapping" tendons so hope they find the cause for yours. Best of luck.
Hi Blum, yes i seriously haven't had a good run since having my TLHR and and I'm very thankful i accidentally come accross this site when i GOOGLED what caused speaking and groin pain in a Ceramic on Ceramic hip replacement. I clicked on an answer and took me to this forum and i first read a story funny thing was it was by another Sue in here and i swrar it was like i was reading my own story and experiences except the other Sue is a different age and not in Melbourne Australia. I have to say it made me cry because i finally found i wasn't alone in my struggles or issues with others experiencing the same pain or issues, in which after seeing multiple specialists and having multiple tests i had specialist saying that the pain in my groin, buttock and down my full leg and into my foot was ALL IN MY HEAD because they couldn't pin point what was causing my pain. I even recorded my hip squeaking over time i was bending forward it is so loud others can hear it. My surgeon who done my TLHR believe me and said it is known to happen and i happen to be one of those very rear cases it happens and the only way to fix it is replacing the ceramic cup to a plastic cup but at this stage my surgeon won't do a replacement surgery at moment as my body has been through so much in surgeries and treatments my body isn't recovering well and also reacting to some treatments and alot of medications making me VERY ILL. All i can say is ask all questions even some questions about some helpful comments in the forum, also get another opinion by a different Surgeon and never ever let the Doctors let you believe that the pain is in your imagination because it's not. If it wasn't for this forum and hearing others experiencing the same pain i honestly would dead as i became very depressed because i knew the pain wasn't in my imagination all i wanted was to get better and return to my very active life with my horses and daughters. I finally found a surgeon and specialist who found somethings that were causing some pain but this has been the longest road to recovering I've ever had and I'm no where close to being back to myself or pain free.
Please persist with your surgeon about your pain and having it investigated until you get the answers you need. I wish you the best of luck and believe in yourself and your not alone. Hugs to you
Hi. I had a trhr on 12/31/2015 due to an accident where I fractured my femur head. I am 59. I have had some recent pain in my IT band going down my right hip to my knee and my knee will get weak and sort of collapse for a second Also, achiness in my right hip and groin/thigh area. I did not call my surgeon or my PT. I have learned, from this site, that most surgeons really don't know what to tell you when this sort of thing happens so I have decided to be proactive. I Googled stretches and strengthening for IT band and did that (easy) and that has helped a lot in a rather short time without leaving my home or wasting money and energy. At first I took ibuprofen to help inflammation and iced it 20 minutes a few times a day then the exercises. Also, been drinking lots of water, especially with lemon juice and or apple cider vinegar, taking glucosamine and chondrotin joint soother and breathing deep, praying, and trying to keep a good attitude. Hope this helps!
Than you so much
Thank you
