im 47,went for a scan due to feeling a lump on my cervix...

im 47,went for a scan due to feeling a lump on my cervix, i explained to the lady at the hospital, she said the doctor sent you for a pelvic scan and that she wont be able to see my servix with this scan, that i would need a different scan to see the cervix.she carried on with the pelvic scan and found a fibroid 6cm ,i have always had very heavy pieriods and thought it was just me,i constantly feel tired and ill, anyway went back to the doctors to dicuss the results, she said you have a fibroid, and that she wasnt worried about it,she said i could leave it as it will shrink when i reach the menopaurse or i could have it cut out,the doctor diddnt seem interested at all i asked about the bleeding she said you could have a coil fitted if you wont i said dont bother,i hade to ask for a blood test for aniemia witch she done,im awaiting the results.i told her that the doctor couldnt see my servix with the scan that i had,my doctor said i will send you for another scan if you wont,i said to leave it as my smear test was ok do you think i should have been refered to a specialist for this

Are you worried about the lump? If you are then it might be worth going back to your GP for more information, just to reassure yourself and to clear up any possible lapses in communication between your GP and yourself. However, fibroids are nothing to worry about, and like your GP said you do have the option to have it removed. If you go to a gynecologist i suspect they will tell you something similar. And as for the heavy bleeding, taking the fibroid out will probably help but as you refused this the next best option is the IUS (or "coil" ), which works similarly to the contraceptive "mini" (progesterone only) pill. I hope this helps, good luck!

P.S, I didn't put that winky smiley face there, I must have clicked on it by accident! sorry!

Hi ekb505,

You didn't put the face there, it is a problem with the site that when you use " immediately followed by a bracket it inserts the smiley like this &quotwink. I've inserted a space to clear it. This is known about and is on the list of fixes.
