My consultant says I have sufficient damage to my hip to justify replacement, however I m still quite active even though it can get very painful. Wondered if anyone else has an active job post op & how they got on?
hi alanlan i had my thr of the right hip 2 month ago, ineed the left i am looking to do it like in a month, maybe less time,,,, i am A CHEF so yes you can do heavy lifting, i am 38 year old, i can evend ance salsa and do some martial art (with precaution) i fill soo good of the thr that i dont know why i spend so long having this pain..
Thanks I'm fairly mobile & active now and know there's going to be a recovery time, but don't want to be worse off than I am now if that makes sense
The thing with this operation Alan is evryone is different. Everyone recovers in there own time at there own pace. There is no point in saying oh yes you will bounce bac and be back at work in 6 weeks after the op because just some times it doesnot work out like that and there is no point pushing yourself to get back either it is up to your body. What meds you are put on and how you cope. But you have a better and quicker chance of recovery if you don't wait. I waited almost 4 years till I could hardly walk. I regret not getting it done 2 years ago. So juyst be prepared not to rush.
Thanks for that, sounds sensible
Hi Alan, like you I was quite active beforehand although sometimes in pain and was worried about the recovery and being worse off. However, your hip will not get any better until you have the surgery and your surgeon would not offer it unnecessarily. I went for the op and I am glad I did as I now have the prospect of doing so much more than I could before. I am only 4 weeks post op but well on the way to recovery already. Hope this helps.
Thanks Fiona cant fault that logic, good luck with your recovery :-D
Hi Alan
From my experience I would say that the hip will suddenly reach a point where you find that you can do very little. I spent several years having intermitent pain but was still quite active. The consultant was reluctant to operate until it was really necessary because of my age. During the two weeks leading up to surgery I suddenly found myself unable to walk for even five minutes and driving was almost impossible. I was so greatful to be going for the op(THR right hip) My friends said I was so happy that they would have thought I was off on my holidays. I'm now 3 weeks 3 days post op. For the first time for years I sat in the passenger seat of a car today without feeling any pain or discomfort. You will be fine provided you do your exercises and walking post op and take sufficient time off work to make a proper recovery. 12-13 weeks at least for the sort of work you do. I advise you to get your name onto the operating list now as otherwise you may well find yourself off work because your hip damage is preventing you from doing the activities required to carry out your work.
I wish you all the very best.

thanks for that, more think about, but I see a trend, that I wouldn't be able to without this forum. best wishes
Hi Alan, I work in security and like you I struggled to work with the pain and was worried about the length of time off as I was told by my consultant that once coping was too difficult I would need both hips replaced consecutively. I worked with a colleague who had returned to work after 6 weeks from thr.
My consultant is one of the slow and steady type, so once the time came, I went on the waiting list (approx 3 months), then advised 3 months recovery on crutches, then 2nd hip surgery followed by 3 months recovery before return to work.
That was mid March, so my return to work is estimated at mid December and my employer seemed OK.
I recieved a phone call saying a slot was available with a different Surgeon which I took.
I am just over 2 weeks post op, which puts me about 1 month ahead of schedule if everything continues to plan.
Thanks, good luck with recovery.
