Important advice for anyone post surgery or fracture.

Not wanting to scare anyone, but I thought I would share with the group recent experiences with 2 of my friends following broken ankle, and broken leg. They both developed a clot which in both instances became life threatening. Neither was given advice on blood thinners, or excercises etc.

As a nurse, with experience of multiple ankle surgeries, I though I would share my advice.

Discuss with your doctor about blood thinner, low dose aspirin etc to take. Especially important for women on the pill or hormone therapy.

Get a compression stocking for your other leg.

Excercise both legs. Even if you are in bed. I used to 'write' with my feet.

Learn about what to look out for, and notify dr of any concerns.

I can't emphasise enough the impotance of this. Don't put youself a risk.

Cheers,

Thanks a lot. I had a ankle surgery 7 weeks ago and was given the blood thinner injections for 40 days when I was discharged from the hospital. They were a pain to take every day and also left some scars/ marks on my stomach but I think it is worth it. I have heard about the blood clotting problems as well.

I thought they are given by NHS by default in U.K. But if anyone wasn't given then it's definitely worth asking your dr. Thanks again

I was put on blood thinner injections after surgery until my cast was taken of last week  then I was told to stop them

Since having the boot on I've been taken of my thinners I'm travelling abroad in 3 weeks will I need to take them for the flight or will I e ok it's being in a boot still none weight bearing
