In pain and wide awake

It's 0300 and I'm awake I've gone and got a fresh drink taken some more pain killers but tonight nothing seems to be working. Had a bad pain weekend too. I'm so tired! I just want to sleep 😴

The SLEEP is critical and you've got to work on that....I did for many years and I have my sleep combo posted on the Alternative group here.....check it out and it's what I do and I SLEEP.....8+ hrs per night.     Joy

Hi Maley,

I have completed a pain management course and think that over all I have benefitted from it. I still don't sleep well but having researched this in some depth have discovered that apparently people with Fibromyalgia tend not to enter the deep restorative stage of sleep. It was also found out, through sleep studies, that people (without Fibro) who were deprived of sleep complained of symptoms similar to those described by people with Fibromyalgia. I know this sounds a bit like a catch 22 situation but I refuse to be disheartened. Establishing good habits are helpful with regards to preparation for sleep, drinking warm milk can help. I find that I tend to sleep more readily if I go caffeine free from about 4 in the afternoon. That said, I still have those nights when I just can't get comfy enough to fall asleep. On those nights I get up and try to distract myself from the pain and focus on something else. Another technique is mindfulness, this is a technique that is based in living in the moment. With practice it is possible to take the importance away from the pain which in turn seems to turn down the volume on the pain. I learned this on the pain mangement and am still using it on a daily basis.

Something that was said to me that struck a chord was that to give our attention to the pain gives it more importance. I tested this out by thinking specifically about an area of my body that was in pain, trying to work out what type of pain it was. I soon noticed that the area that I was focussing on seemed to become more painful than it was at the start of the exercise. Using mindfulness, I tend to acknowledge that the pain is there and just let it be. It takes more energy to fight it than it does to live with it and energy is something that I tend to lack.

I hope that you have managed to sleep and are feeling better soon.
