Infection again.

After having my TKR op in July 2017 on my right knee I have had three infections on the calf of my right leg and have just been diagnosed with another infection of the leg (dec 2017). I have been put on antibiotics for a month 1 to be taken four times a day, Flucloxacillin 500mg, that's a lot to take. Previously my treatments for the infections with antibiotics only lasted a week with the infections coming back within 3 to 4 weeks. I'm still using crutches to get about all this since my operation in July, my physio at the Hospital now refuses to treat me due to me having recurrent infections.Just wondering if any one else has had these problems?

Hello,

My heart goes out to you as I had my TKN done 11/20/17 went home alone some help from sister and I never went thru such hell. Yes I had an infection, too antibiotics for 1 would and inflammation came again. I constantly have a low grade fever but seem to be on the mend now. If your doctor is not helping you, please search for the best no matter the cost! Something is wrong and you need the best doctor to help you!!!

For burning pain I have found to use pure tree tea oil, apply just a drop to the purest lotion you have and watch the burn subside!!!

My question to you is what kind of anesthesia did you have and we're you satisfied with that decision. I had a spinal and the doctor put me thru hell after 4 tries with the needle. I have severe spinal stenosis and scoliosis. I am in dispute!!!!

That is terrible!!  Someone needs to investigate why you're having this recurrent infection.

I don't understand why a physio would refuse to help you with respect exercises?

I feel compassion for you, this must be very hard.

Are you in UK and do you have a supportive surgeon and GP?

Is it cellulitis or do they have any ideas on it?

I  haven't a GP as such as my GP left the Surgery in June , and I haven't been given a new GP so each time I have a problem I see a different GP (same clinic), all they do is scratch their heads and ply me with Antibiotics, knowing that I have an appointment in January with my Surgeon and basically hoping he will sort it all out. My Physio has informed him of the problems i'm having hoping something will be done. The thing is if I had a GP then he or she would of chased this all up long ago. On seeing a different  GP each time theres no rapport built with each other, ie no understanding of what I have or am going through. I don't understand either why my Physio thinks its best to stop seeing me , just keep doing the exercises at home he said..

I think by giving me a heavy dose of antibiotics this time they'll hit it on the head and the infection wont keep coming back.

Sorry Jenny  yes i'm in the UK (sussex)

It may just be a matter of resources...it is the norm for people in UK to effectively take the lead in their physical rehabilitation after knee replacement. I was fortunate in the amount of physiotherapy I received but it varies a lot from area to area.

In USA they seem to get a more intensive programme often, just based on what people share on this forum though. Health systems vary from country to country a lot.

Is your appointment early January?

Was it arranged as a routine appointment or specifically in response to the problems you are having?

The appointment was arranged as a routine just to see how the operation has gone and then to discharge me, its in mid Jan 2018, they aren't aware of the problems i'm having,or maybe they are now as my physio did say he will send an email to my surgeon ,that was last Wednesday.

Yes, I would have thought the surgeon would want to know, make sure you chase it up !

Kathryn I think I had a spinal anaesthetic ,it wasn't very comfortable but I got over it.

Thank you Christopher for answering my question. I am finding out that doctors intimadate patients into thinking they have to do it this way when You Do Not!!! You can have a general anesthesia, meds for the nausea, if needed and a morphine pump to deal with the pain! I hurt for at least 10 min while they butchered my spine with a needle!

Please everyone, stand up for yourselves!!! I am having nightmares about this whole incident. But God is in control and we will get thru with His Help!

So glad to hear you are getting better! Rest, take your vitamins and eat correctly.

All in Prayer!
