Synonym: glandular fever

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is usually a self-limiting infection, most often caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is a human herpes virus. EBV (human herpesvirus 4) causes approximately 80-90% of cases of glandular fever, with the remainder due largely to cytomegalovirus, human herpesvirus 6, toxoplasmosis, HIV and adenovirus.1
