Inflamed scar 5 months on

Hi, I had a THR almost five months ago and have been just happily progressing well. However, just lately I’ve noticed my scar feels a little bit tender, raised and slightly inflamed. I’ve been treating the scar with bio oil for several weeks but now not sure quite what to do. it’s a perfectly sealed scar, nothing weeping or leaking and can’t think quite why it’s decided to go sore on me - anyone else had this? THANKS! Marianne

Just a thought - do you think a hot bath could have caused it? I did enjoy luxuriating in bath water a bit too warm recently and I guess the skin is still a bit raw and tender… Marianne

it normal for the scar tissue to be a bit tender from time to time. keeping it massaged by not allowing the scar to stiffen up helps as does the oil you are using. your only 5 months and have a lot more healing ahead. some types of movement is a issue for many hippies especially getting in and out of tubs. in a few more months your hip implant and scar tissue will become more flexible as the bone and tissue tightens and grows to secure the components in place. just more healing time to complete the long term healing process.
sending healing blessings your way.

I’m also 5 months since my second THR, and my scar has been quite tender for around the last month. I’ve also been using bio oil, which I feel has helped. I put the tenderness down to me becoming more active - including cycling and swimming. My last THR was 15 years ago, and I don’t remember much detail, but I know the scar healed well within a year and it’s faded really well, so I’m confident this second one will do the same, and movement of the hip will eventually be as good as the previous one. It’s difficult not to worry, but keep up massaging and the exercises and I’m sure within the year you’ll see a huge improvement. Good luck.

Maybe ditch the oil for a week or so as it is highly concentrated and perfumed. Just try the cream with the big letter and 2 numbers instead (getting around the mods) this should see a reduction in tenderness if the oil is irritating. Best Wishes

Helen

its normal i had the same issue with mine and even 9 months out it still gets a little sore. I was told its completely normal.

Good idea Helen ! I was advised to use this cream with the big letter and number :open_mouth: both on my recent hip replacement scar and now an even more recent hand surgery scar. It seems to keeping the tissue supple and should in time reduce scarring

Hi, I’m nearly at the 4 year mark & i used coconut oil instead of bio, 3 times a day & gently massaged it for 2-3 mins. You honestly have to look really close to see my scar now x

Hope you are well Fernlady!

I’m absolutely fantastic, how are you x

I’m v well thank you! Also coming up for 4 years… time flies, x

It sure does! I was told I’d need my left hip replaced at some point but so far so good! x

My other hip is ok at the moment. fingers crossed for both of us! x

Hi Fernlady,

May i enquire how long after hip replacement surgery you started applying coconut oil to your scar?

Hi Garbo
I had my staples out at 10 days & then waited another week so approx. 3 weeks after. It’s important to massage properly to break down any scar tissue x
