Information on Europe Hospitalization rates

Can anyone please tell me if there is a database with yearly hospitalizations by disease area? I am looking for # of yearly cases for :

Prosthetic Joint Infections

Pneumonia

Urinary tract Infections

Skin and soft tissue infections

Intra abdominal Infection

Post Operative Infection

Osteomyelitis

Septicemia

The UK National Statistics site might give you a vague idea of what you want to know smile

Hi Dr Spock! Thanks for your prompt reply! Could you please direct me where to find the data for the EU5 countries namely France, italy, Germany and Spain (and UK Of course) smile

I am meanwhile checking out the UK statistics website

France has 'The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies' , Germany has 'Statistisches Bundesamt Deutschland', Italy has 'The National Institute of Statistics' and Spain has 'Instituto Nacional de Estadística' also the UN have a lot of statistical information that you may find useful. You'll have to have a rummage smile

Also I seem to remember that the NHS themselves may publish useful information along these lines, check out the 'NHS Information Centre' wink

Thanks! this is all very helpful.

One more question : United states have information for all the hospitalizations at one websire (AHRQ). Does the whole Europe have a similar data source where you can look at the # of yearly hospitalizations by diseases?

Maybe there's something on the 'eurostat' site somewhere smile

Thank you so much! I was able to find some statistics for Europe but the main issue was that the numbers for certain diseases were clubbed together! Any idea where I could find some more granularity!?

Maybe the World Health Organisations site has got something :D

Thanks for the help! I was able to find a databse on the WHO Website.

smile

A curious question. Would you think research papers (unbiased) are amore trustworthy source of disease incidence and hospitalizations than the WHO database??

The numbers for Spain looked really low.. I did some digging and found that the WHO database covers only 17% of the private hospitals! Which makes me doubt the whole thing now!

Help!

Here is what I found on the WHO site

Here is what I found! The population of USA and EU5 countries is almost the same! But the disease incidence looks drastically different! its kinda close for Pneumonia and UTI. But for others, its very different. Any idea why that would be!?

Diseases USA EU5

Osteomyelitis 58,036 28,181

Post operative infection 158,385 81,899

Prosthetic Joint Infection 34,400 18,699

Intra-abdominal infection 355,572 80,726

Septicemia* 722,401 165,647

Skin and soft tissue infection 629,957 345,772

Pneumonia* 947,061 810,634

Urinary tract infection 571,510 560,430

Specially for Septicemia and Intra Abdominal Infections! The numbers look very low ! 23% of the US numbers! Any idea why that would be?

It's hard to say what's causing this discrepancy, lifestyle, differing immigrant populations, reporting criteria and or definitions etc etc, do the notes on the stats give any indication why? Yeah it'd be hard to come to any reliable conclusion based on a 17% sample size (re Spain) smile

Hi Dr.,

Where can I find data on frequency and duration of ICU stays for Pneumonia and bacteremia in US and EU5 countries
