Injection v operation

Hi

Posted some days ago about having trouble with my other hip (oa) so soon after getting first one done (6 months)

Saw the consultant and he gave me the choice of painkilling injection ( could last 2 months or 2 years!) or going for another THR.

Suppose I am asking my fellow hippies their opinion on these injections, aren't they just a sticking plaster?

Confused as I wasn't offered the injection for my first hip by different consultant?

Thanks

Dee

Hi see I had two steriod injections last year one lasted four weeks second never touched me they do work on some people but they didn't on me if I ever had to have my left hip I would go straight for operation

Hi , I also had both my hip joint injected, with a steroid pain relief , first time it was done ,under local ancesthetic which I found extreamly painfull ,it was done in hospital on the day ward, and gave me about 2 to 3months pain free time ,before I needed to take pain killer again , second time I had general anaesthetic both hips done again this time it only gave me 3weeks pain free .

I was also very sore in my hip joints  for quite a few days afterwards  , I was desperate buy myself some  time, as at that time I was 49

needless  to say both my hip have now been replace, I'm 52, and 20weeks post op ,,

So in answer to your question,,and  in my case Yes it was just a sticking plaster , good luck,, Yvonne  UK

Hi dee

I have had a steroid injection {for a fracture that wont heal after a THR} Its now 3 months and is just starting to wear off. I've got an appt for 23rd of this month....that will be 4 months by then.  I'm sure I'll manage until then.  Its not nearly as bad as it was before he gave me the injection......at the beginning the pain disappeared {completely for about 6 weeks then gradually came back ever so slightly.  I would say that was a result.  He is giving me another one on the 23rd so just hope it works as well.

Just thought i would put the other side of the story

Hi

I've had the injections in both hips, didnt help at all. First THR April 2014 other THR February 2015

My consultant took a three prong approach we do nothing

we do something small

we now do something Big

i just feel it was a process we had to go thru but i knew operation was the end result

Hi Dee,

Each route carries its own risks, but if it were me, I would just get the surgery over with since it seems to be headed down that path anyway.

Sincerely,

It's a sort of fall back mechanism when they are confronted with a patient in pain who is not enthusiastic about thr to offer injections. I was offered one in my knee when I had pain due to weak muscles. It might just be me but the idea of a needle........ahh! Anyway I took the physio route and that worked. With hips I have heard people say it's made no difference and others that it helps for a short time.
