Intermittent Anterior hip/groin pain

I keep getting a sharp pain that starts up at my hip and shoots about halfway down the front of my thigh. It’s hard to pinpoint where exactly the pain is, but it’s at the front of my right hip over towards the groin area. It comes at random times whether I’m sitting, lying or walking and moving around on it. It’s not always there, it’s literally just a “twinge” every now and again that radiates slightly down the front of my thigh, It happens for a second or 2 and then disappears and might not happen again for a few hours. Or other times it goes through a phase where it happens every few minutes for a few hours and then settles down again. It’s completely random and in between the “twinges” it feels totally normal and pain free. Nothing in particular seems to make it worse or better and because it’s not always there I don’t take any pain killers for it. I haven’t injured it or strained anything as far as I can remember, and I don’t know exactly how long it’s been happening but it’s been at least 3-4 weeks. I don’t have reduced range of movement or weakening that I’ve noticed. Don’t want to waste my doctors time but might have to go if it doesn’t settle down soon. Any ideas what it could be?

You dont say how old you are  Lauren but it could be one of several things. A trapped nerve, or osteoarthritis in the hip joint,or inflamed ligaments.   The only way to get a proper diagnosis is to see your  GP.

As you say its "sharp" and "shoots" it sounds more like a trapped nerve but if it worsens do see your GP.

Thankyou for your reply Marina. I’m 26, I’ve never had any hip or joint problems and I was thinking the same as you about the type of pain it is, sounds a bit silly but it does feel like more of a “nerve” pain rather than muscular or bony, if that makes sense. As time goes on I feel like it’s moving more towards my groin.

Think I’ll see my GP just to be safe. Thanks for your advice

Hi Lauren

not sure how old you are but when i went to the drs with my hip groin pain like you i didnt want to waist Drs time but when i got out of bed one day my leg gave way so i did go in the end and i had blood tests and the result was my vitamin D was to quote the Dr dangerously low and i should go to hospital but i support my daughter with child care and so she gave me strong vitamin D and i backed them up with specific foods malt and oil everything that would boost my vitamin D and after a while  i felt really well
