Hi I'm newly diagnosed with diverticulitis. 18.01.18. I was hospitalised due to acute GI bleed. Given iv antibiotics iv fluids and painkillers. Discharged 3 days later to be told start a low reside diet. Had lots of pooping, pain and discomfort . Had one day when thought was getting on mend but it started again. Had bloods taken on 29.1.18 and saw GP on the 30.1 18 slightly anemic but bloods looking good so doc said introduce soluble fibre. Had some lentils in a tinned carrot and tinned potatoes homemade soup made with homemade chicken stock. OMG did I pay for it ....was constantly on loo with watery stools. So the next day went back to toast, chicken and white rice. Today feel bloated and that I needed to go to toilet but nothing happened. So at 5pm today I had some steamed fish, potatoes and 5 sprouts.... now I have wind, cramp pain and dual ache down left side. Can anyone advise me on how what and when to introduce these soluble fibre foods? I'm desperate. Been of work for 3 weeks now and just wondering when will I be better. I'm anxious about eating. Please any advice I will welcome with open arms. 🤔
Everyone is different but it can take days if not weeks to get back to eating. I personally would stay on what ever you feel is best for you. Wait until you feel well enough to introduce different foods. Keep a food diary so you can see what sets you off. I don't eat skins anything with seeds or pips red meat I can't have fried foods But like I said we are all different
Hi Christine.. sorry you're not feeling that well. It is true that it seems everyone is different. I have not only DV but IBS and UC. I tend to do things big when I do'em!!! I used to love lentils and they really bother me now.. same as too many onions oh and sprouts... they make me the same as you - I could heat a small city from eating them!!!!... You could try possibly pureed carrots - parsnips are good carbs too and haven't bothered me and have some flavour. Oatmeal is a good go to as well. I suffer terribly from being backed up and I've found with many things there is no rhyme or reason... it's just more trial and error.. what's good one day isn't the next -at least for me - but you'll find a few staples that work.... but with everything going on, I'm on all sorts of laxatives too and even some days they don't seem to work. Wishing you all the best.
I have had many flair ups over many years. I feel my flair up are unpredictable and it seems a build up of irritants cause my flair ups.
Unfortunately fiber does not agree with me so I try to stay away from a high fiber diet. It is very hard because I too have IBS and go from bad constipation to loose stools.
I try to avoid raw veggies, skins, seeds and eat a lot of ground beef(unless it’s cooked in a crockpot). The crockpot has become my good friend. I do eat chicken, pork and fish but my daily food menu is boring.
At the moment I am having discomfort and don’t have a clue why. I have been using a heating pad on the area and taking Bentyl to relax any spasms. The pain has subsided and I’ll just eat lightly for a few days. It is a very annoying and depressing condition. I try to get my mind off it by keeping busy.
Fortunately I do not work but I encourage you to get back to some normalcy which is hard to do but staying in is not good. There is always the option of surgery but I have known those who have had it only to still have issues. I wish you the very best and try to relax some we all know what you are dealing with. Talk extensively with your doctor and even a conservative surgeon . I have and they say not now! It’s difficult to accept this condition but it could always be worse. God Bless
