Hi there, I know irregular periods are part of perimenapause but I've been spitting and spotting and a bit more at times for about 6 weeks now. Not normally having to wear more than a panty pad Before this I had 3 months with nothing ! Anyone had the same and when did it stop ! And any medication or treatment ? Getting fed up now !
This is all new to me also. I have always had heavy periods but for only 5 to 7 days. This year I have had to cycles lasting more than three weeks. I started taking birth control to stop the bleeding and regulate it but I started bleeding today and o have one week left of the pills. I was told during perimenopause our cycles could be all over the place.
Hi Goosie
You could talk to your doctor about HRTs for the irregular periods but be careful of the side effects also i heard ssris can stop periods but first try an HRT to help stop the bleeding
Hi ! Yes I've heard HRT can treat it, but I'm pretty determined not to go down that route for now. I haven't heard of ssris what's that ?
SSRIs are antidepressants and they can help with changing the cycle of your period too and help your moods just talk to your doctor about this please since you do not want an HRT
Yes you're right , I think cause I've been regular for years it's all a bit scary . I'm just finding the whole thing overwhelming , wish my periods would just stop . Its nice to hear there are others around going through the same stuff !
Thanks ! I will , sounds like there are options out there.
Hiya
Yep, sounds like 2015 is THE year for many of us!!
I am a little excited as these past 5wks have been the first real sign that things might be changing.
From being regular as clockwork, I have had my FIRST, proper disruption to my cycle:-) !! A little bit of v.light spotting/a day of very heavy bleed/absolutely nothing the next day/breakthrough spotting 5 days later/very light spotting for 4 days instead of a 'proper' Period......can you tell how excited I'm getting about all this??!
Its my Day 14 on Wednesday so let's see what happens then. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't bring me a bleed!!!
I don't think I'll ever feel confident enough to go out without wearing something for fear of getting caught out. Aside from the hot sweats coming, I'm looking forward to getting shot of this terrible 'unwated, friend' who's been cramping my style for the past 41yrs. Urgghh....put like that it just seems surreal!
Susan mentioned SSRIs. They're being dished out willy nilly for 'Peri symptoms'. I'd have a look at the list of side effects before considering them: its vast. Not for me, ta, but i understand they help lots of ladies through this cr*p time. Considering I don't have any of those horrible symptoms, I would never take something that would encourage them!!
I'm not wanting trad HRT at the mo: my Bioidentical Progesterone cream and Menopace are keeping me well for now. But when that changes I'll defo give HRT a try. TBH I'd love to get to Meno proper without taking it. But for the sake of my bones I suspect I'll take it. My late mum had 'bad bones' - had 3 hip replacement ops, all post-meno. Didnt stop her doing all the white-knuckle rides in Orlando aged 72:-) !!
I am excited as to what Wednesday holds for me....but I will be totally gutted if the Red Devil arrives to spoil my party!!!
Hoping you're 'Devil-free' soon:-)
Sx
Hi Goosie. If you don't want to go on HRT even if bioidentical/natural, then the best is Vitex Agnus Castus, about 1000mg/day every day for seveal months.
Take care. T.
Hi T , thanks that sounds like a great idea. I'll go ahead and get some, I'm thinking that my sister mentioned that too. I always prefer to go natural !
I TOTALLY get your excitement. Congrats! A friend started having hot flushes and when I told her it was perimenopause, she said 'I'm graduating? Yay!'
LUCKY YOU. I got a big grin on my face from this. Good luck, fingers crossed.
Yes. I have a period, then nothing for a few months, then spotting for a week or so, then nothing for a couple of months, then a period. Although, last time I had spotting it turned out to be an upper UTI and I ended up in hospital. I've heard HRT helps but that is controversial. I've heard that phyto-oestrogen supplements give some relief although I don't know about side effects. The Pharmacist might be able to make some suggestions for relief.
Hi Goosie
I was 47 when I started going through what you are going through now. But I had always had heavy period between this. I have lost large clots and could fill an extra strength pad within seconds some days. I would have a period which lasted a week or even three weeks. Then I would stop and start the spotting you describe. Once this sort of bleeding - hardly there - went on for 19 weeks. I had bouts of this up until I was 53.
I did have several small fibroids which I didn't need an op for as the doc said I was so close to menopause they usually shrivel away once periods have stopped. But I have several friends who had the same symptoms as me and they didn't have fibroids.
For those looking in I found the heavy periods one minute, spotting the next, and bouts of weeks of periods and weeks and months without were all part of the normal course.
I have been 2 months, 3 months, 5 months, 10 months and even 11 months free and then begun a period. Mostly the periods were very heavy after these breaks but not always. When I had the heavy bleeds the doctor put me on a few weeks of progesterone to give my body a rest. I found that these evened me out for a good few months afterwards regarding the periods but be warned it can be painful the first few days of a period after coming off these. Even so they are worth it. I also became anaemic several times due to the heavy bleeds but it is easly treated with iron tabs from the doc.
It is an unpredictable time but you will come through it.
I am 56 now and at the other side.
Good luck!
Hi ann, that's so comforting to hear ! Sounds crazy but to know it's not that unusual and you've been through similar is very reassuring ! I ' m really glad I joined this forum , as don't want to keep moaning to my friends and family but felt the need to put it out there , Thanks again for your reply 😀😀
Thanks Laura , it's great knowing I"m Not alone. I do have to go for a swab tomorrow so it could be an infection. I'll check out the phyto - oestrogen !
No worries. All the best :-)
You are welcome Goosie.
I kmow how much I worried when I was going through those times. You really don't know what to expect regarding periods so when I saw your post I wanted to reply as I was worried out of my mind when it was happening to me. Some days I would suddenly flood like crazy without any warning and then it would be back to the spotting, thinking I had stopped and then it would start again. I worried there was all sorts wrong with me but it was just the hormones playing up.
Take care all of you xx
