Is DRE painful?

i had dre test done recently, this was 2nd one since my symptoms started. during both i felt burning sensation when he touched it. i keep reading that the test is not painful. i mentioned to doc, he said its probably prostatitis, since its tender to touch. i also felt sensation like i need to pee right away. both burning and acute peeing sensetion went away once he was done. he said my prostate feels normal as far as being smooth and such but said that one side felt a bit bigger than other, which he thought was unusual. i also did a whole bunch of tests, lots of blood tests, yet another urine, another psa, all normal. so
thanks

DRE is uncomfortable not really painful in my experience. That said, if Dr thought you have prostititis he should get get some prostate fluid and see if there is bacteria in it. At least thats what I’ve read but no Dr seems to want to cure prostitis.

Cavo,

When the prostate is painful to the touch of the DRE, it usually indicates prostatitis. The other symptoms you mention, like burning, acute peeing sensation also usually indicate prostatitis. The tests he did urine, blood, and PSA are the correct things to check. But he should also check the semen for bacteria. There can also be non bacterial prostatitis, which is a more difficult to treat.

Thomas,

When I started seeing my current urologist, he did a DRE and seemed to press firmly on my prostate which felt about like you described. Now, 2 years later, I know that I have very large prostate and perhaps that’s why the DRE felt uncomfortable.

If you are beginning your journey to diagnose and treat BPH or other prostate-related issue, you’ll have to make peace with the idea of being poked and tested and experiencing things that to a urologist/GP are normal but to a non-medical person are intrusive and upsetting. But, are all necessary to resolve the issues at hand.
