Is Excercise beneficial after 2 years?

If a young patient after hip replacement didn’t follow proper excercise for 2 years. Do you think excercising now can be beneficial?

Yes, I think exercise is always beneficial in protecting our joints. Perhaps you could visit a physical therapist for a few weeks to get you warmed up until you feel ready to go to the gym, or exercise however you’d like. They will help you strengthen the muscles surrounding your hip so that it’s protected. Good luck! I think it’s a great idea to get back into it and you will probably feel much better in turn!

Yes certainly but if you have developed bad walking habits you will have to work hard to get back to where you could have been. Good luck. Richard.

Well better late than never I guess, but I would strongly recommend you get an experienced personal trainer first and explain everything and not go it alone, first time out.

HI I am sure any form of exercise would be very beneficial not just for your hip but in general, perhaps it would be a good idea to get some advice from a physiotherapist or a personal trainer or even your GP I used to go to the gym regularly before I had problems with my hip, I have always had back problems and very limited on what I could do but I felt much better for it! I have just had my right hip done and having left one done next month, I am hoping to get back to the gym or will do lots of walking, I am 73 best of luck Cyndey

Walking is good exercise for hips.
You could build up distance with time.
I did minimal exercise but walked daily from day 1. Check your gait first.
Good luck

The answer is yes.

You know there is very weak evidence that physical therapy is necessary after hip replacement … more and more surgeons simply tell their patients to walk after surgery … Walking is a great way to use the muscles.

There is also the issue of soft tissue … soft tissue take a while (often a year or more) to fully recover after surgery … So two years later is actually a fantastic time to start working out …

Were you under the impression that by not working out earlier, you somehow permanently damaged yourself? … I think it’s just like not having a hip replacement and not working out for a few years … you’re going to be rusty and sore … but you can’t damage the device by starting to work out … and the muscles … well they will let you know the right pace …

Go for it! I follow a group of highly activate hip replacement folks (actually hip resurfacing) … and many of them say their bodies really hit peak recovery like 2 years or so after the surgery.

Thanks.
I have also heard some people are really very active even after hip replacement, and most are 40-50 + aged.
I am just 27. I did excercise but not properly. I am hoping that by excercising now I will develop that strength and flexibility soon.

I am 27.

Exercise will always improve every aspect of the body. We cannot all afford a personal trainer etc., but, start by walking and begin to build your fitness slowly, do stretching exercises you can find on line then maybe join the local leisure center and use the qym equipment. Good luck.
