Is Health Anxiety Taking Over

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this & this is my first post.

Last year i was having a lot of pains in my head around the eyes, ears etc, i went to see my GP fearing the worst and after several return visits they finally sent me for CT & MRI scans which both came back clear, as soon as i got these results it was like instant relief, ever since i have had no more pains, worry etc. the only other thing it could have been is anxiety causing all these feelings. i have been fine ever since until Friday last week at the gym doing pull ups, 2nd set in i got this almighty pain up the back right hand side of my head around my ear & above my right eye (this worried the hell out of me) it lasted around about 5 minutes and then just ended up been a dull head ache for about an hour then i was fine after that i forgot all about it, went back to the gym Monday and the same happened again, and then again Tuesday during intercourse with my Fiance. i decided to book an appointment with my GP as this was starting to really worry me, the GP decided to send me straight to A&E for tests. Upon my arrival i had blood tests done and a CT head scan and was told i would be staying in over night for observations & a potential lumbar puncture the following morning (now i'm really thinking something is wrong). However the doctor came round later than evening and said the bloods & scan were clear but i still have to stay in for observations / lumbar. A different doctor then came round the next morning and said he had also looked at the scan which was clear but he was there to do the lumbar as a precautionary check. The doctors struggled to get any fluid out of the lumbar so gave up trying after 25-30mins, about an hour later the consultant came to see me and said he'd also looked at the scan and was more than happy with it so need to do anymore tests and discharged me.

Ever since i feel like my Anxiety symptoms have come back (random pains in the head, eyes, ears, neck). & am scared to go back to the gym in case i get these pains again.

I just feel as though the lumbar was inconclusive. Why did they do it in the first place if they were happy with the scan. I am sure this is all in my head, but i cant seem to get on with my life at the minute, surely if there was anything wrong any of the 3 doctors would have picked it up on the scan. can anyone relate to any of this?? i just want to get back to normal.

Hi Ryan in my opinion and this is only my opinion I would want to get the lumbar checked out properly only for the fact in what you said this pain only happens when you are at the gym once you get checked out and it's all clear then you can get your anxiety checked out

Do you take steroids for enhancement of muscles? This could be one explanation. Other explanation is that you strained something and the pain brought on the beast of anxiety. Somehow your body remembers and panics when something feels wrong. I would say, if this continues, to talk to the doctor about anxiety and possible plan to treat it.

Also look into vitamin deficiencies in your body. Especially the B family

Hi David.

No i have never taken any steroids etc.

Everyone at the gym said maybe a trapped nerve, but surely a trapped nerve wouldn't just hurt when lifting weights?

HI Gino,

The consultant said it would have been dangerous to try the lumbar again that day and he didn't feel any need to try again.

Surely one of the doctors would have picked something up on the CT scan it it was anything major.

The only thing you can do is listen to the trainers at the gym and your doctor. If it is anxiety, then talk to your doctor about it and a plan to treat it. Maybe take a rest from the gym until you figure out the problem ? We are only human and a lot more fragile than is commonly known. Brain connected to nerves in the spinal column and all that. I wish you luck.

Hi Ryan I am not saying there is anything wrong what I am saying is tell your gym trainers what your problem is and see what they say if you our not happy stop your gym and see someone about your problem don't push your self you could do more damage

Sounds like they were wanting to do lumbar just to make sure there wasnt any fluid build up causing the pain.. either that or checking for nervous system related problems..

sounds alot like a strained muscle though

if 3 doctors told you you are okay, you should be fine. It would be rare for all of them to be wrong.

In saying that, you seem to have anxiety. If you want you can get tests done again but i wouldn't because that might just fuel your anxiety more until it becomes a cycle. I would try seeing if i could get into therapy. It might help you a lot!

Hi Anne,

I think so too, but i just cant seem to get that into my head, surely they wouldn't have discharged me if they thought anything was wrong.

I've tried counselling before but it wasn't for me, Is there any sort of therapy you would suggest?
