I was originally diagnosed in 2010. I have recently been told I have a urinery infection, but apart from the fact that two lots of antibiotics don't seem to be working, all my symptoms relate to this, especially an irregular heartbeat and confusion. HELP!
I had hyperparathyroidism and in 2008 I had surgery which removed three of the four enlarged glands. This condition interferes with calcium metabolisn. I was producing three times as much calcium as I should have been. I also had nodules on my thyroid gland and that gland and nodules were removed at the same time. I understand that I developed this condition from a long term medication that I had taken. I don't see how a urinary infection and the taking of antibiotics is related to hyperparathyroidism.
Hi, yes hyperparathyroidism will not get better on it's own so it is permanent until you have surgery to take out the enlarged parathyroid gland/s which is causing you to have high calcium. Make sure you find an experienced surgeon who has done plenty of parathyroid surgeries so they know where to look as they can be tricky to find sometimes as they are so small and sometimes don't show on scans. May I ask why you haven't had surgery yet? It really isn't good for your body to have this disease for too many years, it's not good for your bones or kidneys and just your body in general. My wife had a parathyroidectomy 3 years ago and the symptoms have returned. There is a strong suspicion thaat she has lithium induced hyperparathyroidism whch probably means that the 3 remaining parathyroid galands are defective. She has recently been prescribed cinacalcet (It will cost us at least £2,600 per year)and we are hoping this will manage to abate her symptoms. Look at the web site I've shown below. You will become one of the UK's leading experts. Unless lithium induced it will tell you everything you need to know about hyperparathyroidism. Never use a surgeon that doesn't carry out interoperative PTH measurements. Good luck - it's a horrible disease.
